Good afternoon. My 1150GSA gearbox is leaking oil from somewhere, and it's getting worse. I've got all the back end off as I thought it was the gearbox rear seal but that looks fine and the gaiter doesn't show any signs of oil internally. The back plate of the box is covered in oil as is the swingarm etc. I must point out that this has been going on a while..... I changed the gearbox about 25k ago (now at 60k) and I'm not entirely sure of the replacement boxes provenance.... but there can only be a few other places it could be leaking. I'm assuming that the front seal is OK as the clutch isn't slipping but I guess it could be still dripping down and out. The movement of the air in that region obviously spreads the oil far and wide so it makes it difficult to identify the exact cause.

One thing however - does the neutral switch have a seal? The switch has a raised plastic section that looks like it should mate with the gearbox surface but I'm not sure if it could be leaking from there?

I'm going to get my old gearbox overhauled soon and replace this one (which has problems staying in top) so I might just put the whole lot back together and forget about it but I'd like to fix this leak if I could now I've got it disassembled.

Any other ideas would be welcome!

It does seem to be. Obviously the further back it goes the more it spreads but the gearchange assembly is very dirty. I thought this might be because the 'protection plate' section that envelopes the right side behind the output shaft was stopping it gettign to the right hand side so much. Why?

This may sound silly and forgive me if you have already checked............but........

the oil filler O ring tends to let go ..........it induced all sorts of panic in me when mine went..........it wasnt obvious it was leaking but looked like a shed load of oil on LHside of gearbox..........

all coming from a minute leak in the oil filler and chanelling down one groove in the cooling fins then splattering on LHS of gearbox........

once found it was a 76 pence fix..........:thumb

Nothing is too silly! I'll check and see... but judging on the fact that when I change the gearbox oil there is only a fraction of what I put in it then I'm almost sure it's gearbox oil - and the fact it stinks with that strange gearboxy smell too :-)

I'll check, but I'm now tending towards reassembly and get the knacked old box fitted with new bearings and refit that.

Thanks again

Jason
