Hi all,
Changed my gearbox oil today and noticed some swarf on the magnetic drain plug....no large particles but fine stuff

The bike has 60000km on the clock and I have absolutely no service history. It’s the first time I am changing the gearbox oil. For all I know the swarf could have been there since it’s running in...

Oil itself was a clear brown color....

Gearbox runs smooth with no symptoms whatsoever

Cause for concern?

normal to have some. depends on amount though. can you post photo?

If it shifts gears smoothly and operates without any knocks or noises then why worry ?

There is a swarf collecting magnet inside the gearbox so BMW expect some wear particles as normal.

Normal, assuming it's done a few thousand miles. If there are no gearbox symptoms then this isn't something to worry about. Gearboxes aren't the weak point - FDs are

Thanks for this...coming from a Japanese final drive (FJR) so not used to seeing anything on the magnetic drain bit...

Gearbox oil....not fd oil....

Sorry my reference to the fjr was misleading because of course on the fjr the gearbox is lubricated with engine oil and the only other oil is the FD oil...

Good. FD tends to have a small amount of paste in recessed drain plug magnet rather than small silver flakes. Latter normal in gearbox.

Do read posts on here about FD oil change. That's the one you should do frequently. Gearbox interval less important
