Not GS (bike) related but there's a lot of wise people on here.

Working on my Volvo 440 GS (tenuous link) at the weekend on suspension bits and bobs. Driveshaft came out of place (accidentally) along with a good amount of gearbox oil. Got it all back together and need to top up the oil.
Volvo manual says to use Volvo special gearbox oil (which as chance would have it is bloody expensive). Haynes manual says the same but early 440's can use SAE 80W, later ones can't. Why? Is there any real difference? Will topping up with normal stuff bugger it all up? Engine and transmission is actually sorced from Renault, I take it they don't need to use Volvo special oils.
