Anyone know the actual amount of gearbox oil the 2012 twin cam takes? Mr Haynes says 700ml, well it takes considerably more than that to reach the level plug. Cheers.

My experience suggests 800 ml
A litre bottle should just be enough to do both gearbox and fd but don’t spill any :)
Cheers Mikey, yes that sounds about right mind you the American oil I’m using comes in a quart bottle so slightly less than a litre, so no don’t want to spill any 😆

1 litre bottle= 800ml in gearbox and remaining 200ml in FD 👍

Was originally 220, then reduced to 180 when there were reports of leaking seals. I have settled on 200 and have done so for many years as have many others. 2010 on have a breather in any case.

FD is 180ml if i recall
Bmw originally quoted 220, then reduced to 180 due to seal misting.
My personal findings were premature input pinion bearing wear at 180ml
200 ml seems to be the sweet spot.
You may well get some misting from the rh seal in the summer at altitude, say, the alps .

One other thing that slightly confuses me........everybody says refill the final drive through the speedo sensor hole, why would you do that when there’s a dedicated filler plug?

First 1200’s were “sealed for life” and didn’t have drain or filler plugs

Because the filler plug is err...on the underside of the later bikes. Good luck trying to fill from there

So I'm guessing the comments you're thinking of refer to later bikes
