Hi guys, 2002 1150gs, Ive had a whine coming from the gearbox for the last thousand miles,no problem changing gear,no leaks from input or output seals and drained oil doesnt look too bad or anything else, but still a definate whine from the box. After reading about mr magicfingers and his dead gearbox, im thinkin about sorting mine before it goes tits up aswell. Before I start taking it apart can anyone offer any advice on removing and refitting the bearings and seals? Or any other part of the procedure for that matter. Apart from normal tools/heat gun and a bearing puller any other tool I need?
Cheers in advance for any help

Have you ever had a gearbox appart? It's the one job I'm flippin scared of! I'd certainly take lots of pictures to make sure I put it together properly. Don't you have to set certain float distances with shims etc too? I keep promicing myself I'll do it one day. I've got too spares in the garage to play with!

Good luck with it anyhow

I took my 11GS gearbox apart as the taper rollers of M94 gearbox were starting to go. I managed to get all the bearing out except one and then read on the critical nature of shimming and gave in. I sent mine to Steve Scriminger at SED and I read Steptoe also rebuilds them as well.

They seem a bit sensitive to setting up so it was declared a pro job and too big for me...

As long as you're happy with the initial diagnosis i.e. that it's the gearbox rather than fd or tyres etc., then I'd go with the others and recommend getting someone like SED to rebuild it. The bulk of the labour is in the removal and refitting and the parts will cost pretty much the same whether you're doing it or not so the only extra cost to you is the actual gearbox rebuild - probably 2hrs labour.

If you're determined to do it yourself, don't forget that you'll have to make the judgements on which bits are ok and which ones aren't. You could well end up replacing stuff that's ok and you STILL won't have a warranty.
