Riding home from work yesterday and noticed that the gear selector pannel was not showing what gear I was in. Pulled of the motorway, changing up and down gears but still blank. Got it into neutral, (still no numbers or even green N light). However, when I put the sidestand down, the engine cut out.

So no idea what gear I am in (inc neutral), and cant start engine with the stand down. :eek

On todays ride, numbers occasionaly show up, fade out, incorrect or just not there. (noticed they sometimes appear when the power is engaged but then not when the clutch is in) Could these bikes be affected by the cold?

Does Anybody have any ideas please, or is it back to the dealer again (another long wait) :nenau

Have read the gear indicator module at the rear of the gearbox can go on the fritz. It is located on the rear of the gear box, easier to find from the left side of the box.
Some blokes have been getting them replaced by their dealer, others have been spraying the wire connector with WD spray.

I suspect the computer doesnt know what gear its in and may explain why the bike cuts out when the side stand is down.

Hope this helps.

Gonz.

Probably the sensor which is at the back of the engine. They can be affected by water but haven't heard of one being too cold - perhaps it got wet and then the water in it froze.

Try a healthy dose of WD40 over the sensor and surrounding area.

If the computer is getting a signal that the side stand is down, and not getting a signal that you are in neutral, then it will cut out as its supposed to do. So it seems likely that the only prob is the gear position indicator , the sensor at the gearbox most probably. Bit or damp is likely.

If it were my bike I would go on riding it until cured by WD40 or the dealer - after all, did your last bike even have a gear position indicator? Mine didnt. And there's no indication that you have anything more than a minor electronics problem is there?

Have a poke around, clean up some contacts etc

Many thanks guys :beerjug:

I will have a squirt around with WD40 today, and will report..

You are right about not having an indicator on my last bike, but at least it had a neutral light!!!

regards

I had the same thing happen on mine when returning from Portugal. In addition the instruments started "Sticking" as though they were the second hand on a clock. CW replaced the gear position switch and the entire instrument panel under warranty with no quibble. Bit of a worrying failure though...

Disconected something... sprayed all around.... refitted said thing...

Still no idea what gear I am in or when in neutral :nenau

oh bugger. Guess It is back to the waiting list at the dealer..

Any other ideas anybody?

Some bikes do this when they get wet - it's caused by water getting into the gear indicator potentiometer - it is sited at the rear of the gearbox, you can see it from the nearside of the bike - it has a couple of wires coming out of it.

This is fairly common problem - it happened on my bike - go back to your dealer and they will fix it under warranty (mine started doing it after about 6,000 miles - every time I rode in the wet or washed the bike)

There have been many discussions of this on this site - try doing a search on 'gear indicator'.

I have joined Kevmulcock with the same problem today. Bike was quite wet from road so I will try the WD40 treatment tomorrow. Mine is visually stuck in 5th gear at the moment, but started out with a blank screen. Same cut out scenario with the side stand.

I can help a bit here, neutral is between 1st-2nd try that :D ,and even though I have a gear indicator I very very rarely look at it.
I just know what gear I am in by speed and RPM,and it must be annoying though when things keep breaking, though I am still waiting for something to break five years down the line on my 1150 :clap.

Hey There,

I had the same thing happen to my 1200GS 2 weeks ago.....The broken part looked like a small triple clamp that pivots and that is fitted just inside the gearbox (I only saw the part after they had removed it and the mechanic told me what it was called in Chinese)...the hole in the center had a bushing and it was all crushed, which became loose and gave false gear or no gear readouts.

It sounds like you guys have the same problem...

It was fixed by the BMW dealership under warranty. A 1 hour job!

Cheers
