Hi All,
My 1200GS has a pronounced rattle at idle which goes away when the clutch is pulled in - is this normal? My dealer (SLM) said that it was 'Gear Chatter' - I remain to be convinced...

Also, does anyone know when the new engine mapping was introduced. my GS is a PAIN at low throttle openings (also makes engine breaking not smooth).

Thanks in advance for any comments,

Peter.

Gearbox rattle

Hi Pipedreamer
You're not the only one mine rattles like a ducfartie's dry clutch most annoying certainly not what I expected from a beeemeeerrr agents seem to be of the opinion that as their demo rattles why should'nt mine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank God for earplugs
Mike.
P.S. 6,000 mls

sorry to hear

i've just come off a ducati dry clutch..... my 1200 is perfect in that recpect :)

as for enigine mapping.... our software was changed at the first service and it made a huge difference to the 4000rpm flat spot we had. but as we have now done more then 3000mls the engine just gets smoother and smoother and more willing to rev.

watch out for the oil loss. as much a 1L per 600mls is to be expected at run in.

Mine rattles really loudly too and has done for the last 75000KMs oh and by the way its an 1100. Nice to see the new bikes still have character:D

I remember someone on this site once said that if you balanced the throttle thingies with a twin max it could reduce the noise.....

Sounds weird but it apparantly helped with the "thrust" thingy.

I'll get me coat...

When idling, mine sounds like someone has chucked a load of cashew nuts in the engine, can't say i've noticed any difference between clutch in and clutch out (whilst in Neutral).

The bike works perfectly so i'm not really concerned...i believe it is called charaacaattter or something? ;)

There are two ways to solve it, 1) Wear ear plugs or 2) Fit a race can :D:D

1) Works well, and i'll tell you how 2) does when i get round to ordering my Remus zorst

I have sat next to several ducatis at the lights on my London commute (why anyone is so daring to use a Ducati at this time of year is beyond me!) and they really do out rattle the GS by some margin...but then if the GS purred quietly it'd be called characterless...ho hum

my 1200 clutch does rattle...

or make additional noise..... get on to your dealer to have a look at it.

hated the huge increase in noise in nutral when i released the multi plate dry clutch lever on the ducati multistrada.

1200s are single plate and dry..... surely no rattles can be expected?

i do get a slap as i slow ride in 1st clutching in and out. but i can get rid of that with riding style.

A bit of chatter from the gearbox when idling is not unusual on 1100s/1150s. Some bikes do it, others don't.

As long as the gearbox oil doesn't have metal particles floating in it (like mine did :( ), it's not a problem.

BMW = gearbox chatter, not clutch rattle.
I think I read that the metal particles on the magnetic drain plug are not a problem unless you can read some part numbers on them...
