Gearbox sealant

What do all you GS spannering experts use as sealant for closing up the gearbox housings? Manual says Loctite 5203 but as its £150 to £220 a tube I wondered if anything else (cheaper) was suitable.

Any branded automotive RTV sealant. Doesn't even have to be high temp for the gear box.

Tons of options for under a tenner

Before specifying loctite, it would have been Dow Corning Grey.

When I rebuilt my GSA gearbox I used a low cost tube of generic RTV gasket sealant from my local GSF motor factors.

Can't remember the exact price but it was certainly less than a tenner.

Try typing RTV into Amazon and knock yourself out !

I have always had great success with Wurth RTV, It does not seem to go off in the container so can last for years.
Probably not the cheapest but a very good product.

This stuff is very affordable. Get it on eBay for £6-7. I've used it on crank cases, gearboxes and water pumps. No issues whatsoever and I still own and ride those bikes years later.

It's cheap enough to always have an unopened tube in your toolbox.

It's funny how this just came through my door as your reply notification hit my phone too.

But as always. The preparation and application of the sealant will be of far more importance than the sealant itself.

That aluminium needs to be bone dry. Sealant thinly applied. I like dropping beads as I would TIG weld. Never failed me yet.

It’s brilliant, probably the best there is, DAF used to have it on part number as a sealant to fix diff to axle case leaks without diff removal, just clean it up and put a bead around. (I’m not suggesting you use it this way)

I’ve used it as a go to for years until I ran out.

Edit, just had a look and it’s different, I think it’s the revised version, as I said it was carcinogenic so was banned, saying that if it’s half as good as the original then…

Yeah. It's no way as good as it was now they've made it none toxic. Still absolutely fine though.

I think some just dry quicker and stick easier to oily surfaces.

Most of them are as good as each other. I've tried every brand under the sun for £100 a tube specialist sealants to £4 a tube bargain stuff.

None have failed.
