Hi all,

Sold my 80GS and looking at buying a 2004/5 1200GS. I gather there can be issues around gearbox seals leading to £1K + Bills to replace if they go.....

Just how big an issue is it on these bikes before I splash out or is it just the luck of the draw?????

everyone i know who has had a 1200 has had them replaced

all at bmw's expense :D

Is the FD not more of a worry :nenau

It seems to me most bikes blow an FD (or four) long before other mechanicals start to fail, I am guessing this is a rarer / higher mileage problem or there would be far more reports on here, although I may be wrong....

Hi

Mine went at 28000 miles. Before that everything was fine with the bike (r1200 GS 2005).
I was quoted between £400 and £700 to replace them and BMW was not willing to contribute despite of Full Service, etc.

Regards

O.

Gearbox seals were an issue on the early 1200's, both input and output sides. Either the clutch would start to slip from oil contamination or it would leak into the rubber gaitor on the swing arm. Later bikes seem far less prone to this problem

As others have said, the FD is more of a worry, there are hundreds of threads on the topic but if you like the feel of a GS it's worth taking the risk.

Unless in quick sucession your FD explodes, FPC Fails, EWS packs in, ABS Controller burns out, gearbox starts leaking, discs warp and the RHS valves lunch the engine, in which case you may be a tad dissapointed.

...on the other hand, i don't think i know anyone personally, who's had a FD replaced. maybe a 15 minute seal swap?

maybe they've just not told me or i've forgotten :eek

Yeah, but the world was supposed to end yesterday wasn't it? Compared to that the odd BuMW component failure is a veritable treat, and almost as unlikely, well, Ok a lot more possible. Whatever.
