Gearbox. What are the telltale signs...

And now for a sensible reply
Any noise which has become louder / worse; specifically whining, grinding, cluncking ( as a result of excessive clearances or engagement sytem wear). It is rare for gear tooth drive or over-run face wear, but a consideration never the less.
Poor or unreliable gear selection (no "it's normal" jokes please :D )
Jumping out of gear either under load or especially on the over-run.
Debris in the lubricating oil. A good idea to drain and inspect before you do anything.
Oil leaks.
Lastly, get someone who knows what he is doing to assess the unit before you dive in.

Thanks.

No jumping out of gear yet - but selection seems maybe less positive (than normal ;)), and the box generally seems a bit more notchy too. All this could be because of the recent heat though, thinner oil and all that. The bike has been getting very warm. I've also told myself it's noisier, but this could be due to a: paranoia, or b: the fact that I've recently gone back to the standard silencer and can therefore hear everything again!

Anyway - I'll soon find out as I'm going on me annual hols on it on saturday - hope it lasts... :D

Had mine go a couple of months back. Initial signs were notchiness changing down from 4th to 3rd. Then it became more reluctant to change down from 4th to 3rd until I had to clutch in, wait a sec, pressure on gear lever, blip throttle, gear drops in as revs match, clutch out. All a bit distracting. Then it started to do this on every down-change. Later up-changes got notchy as well.

Got a BMW mechanic to ride the bike. He came back and immediately asked the parts guy to get a new gearbox in.

Just putting mine back together, it started to sound like a cortina(if your old enough to remember them) transmission whineing like a trapped cat under load then quiet off the power (on overrun) have had the box in bits and replaced the offending bearing, cost £30 in parts and will have taken about 10 hours of my time, Bmw dealers at least £300 plus vat sir.

I saw several posts recommending checking the external linkage first in case of selection issues - good advice imo.
Check oil for debris.
GL5 oil only.
