My friend who's gearbox case broke in Budapest is wondering what to do. Shall we get a new box? a reckon? or just a case? The other option would be put a 1150 gsa box in? What's the best way to do it?

Steptoe we would like your opinion please.

Funny question asking about fitting an 1150 gearbox - is it an 1150 bike ? if it's a 1100 you can't fit an 1150 box.

New case , repair or replace with a different box is all your decision.
He has the box in front of him, i'm on the end of the internet.

Sorry its a R1100gs 1999. He broke the right hand top mount off. If the 1150 box is stronger and better we can re do the sub frame and make the clutch hydraulic and buy 1150 footrest, if these are the only probs. But is it worth it?

There's a lot more than that to do. Flywheel is different, clutch unit is different, and so on and so on. Don't even go there.

But as Steptoe says, there are such substantial differences between the 1100 and 1150 gearboxes that trying to fit one just will not be worth it (in terms of time or cost) - it'd probably be cheaper to sell the 1100 and buy an 1150.

This failure is the classic problem that the Touratech 1100 Hard Parts were developed for. I'd be inclined to try getting it welded (apparently the alloy is pretty good and can stand welding if you find someone good - I've seen an old post on here from someone who had it done) - I'd also obtain and fit the hard parts to add some strength to the welded section.

he failed to state because there was not enough information, MattW's answer is a good one, unless of course he can find a secondhand unit quickly and cheaply, but it needs to be from a 1100 with cable clutch, but for cheapness, have it welded and get the hardpart.

Surely it depends on whether he can get a second hand / rebuilt gearbox and how much it'd cost him He's in Budapest so its a bit of a crystal ball job to try and work out what he should do - depends on how much time and money he's got?

Personally I'd try and get it welded - nothing to lose really - just depends on whether he can afford the time and can find a good welder. To have any reasonable chance of success he'll have to remove the box so that proper preps can be ground into the two pieces and then they should be held in some sort of fabricated jig. He's lucky (sort of ) in that it looks like a clean break which should stand a reasonable chance of success, but he'll need to find a good welder.

If he hasn't got the time and / or has enough money (or if the weld fails) then get a replacement box

How the feck am i supposed to know whats best for someone in another country just by looking at a photograph.

Weld it up = how do i know if he has anyone near thats capable of doing the job, let alone how much they'll charge in hungarian rupees.

Second hand box = how do i know where he can get one and at what price. The price varies depending on year, mileage, condition, availabilty.

New gearbox case = Again, how do i know where to locate one, and have they the right tools for shimming the box ?.

The bike is coming back here in the next few days. I have found a box and he has ordered some touratech hard arts.

If you want a meaningful answer you really should provide all the important details (like is the bike going to be in Budapest or the UK!)

I fixed mine by welding it together.
And then installed Touratech Hard Parts.

+1with Pekkavee,its easier to sell a bike with a welded gearbox than it is to sell a welded gearbox...Stewarts right about Morts bits,cheaper and they might arrive before the onset of senility
