I have a size bearing in the gearbox. (r100GS) I need to open it or replace it. I had a oil leak and I didn't notice


the bike have 140 000 kms.

If I decide to buy another gearbox witch ones fit the bike? all R 80 and R 100 gearboxes will fit?

BTW how many kms does normally a gearbox do before an overall?

Others experience may differ, but if I had just ordered a rebuilt secondhand box from Motorworks I would have saved myself a lot of expense and hassle, and I only had a slightly rough rear bearing. My GS has been off the road for almost a year while I sue the crook who bodged the repair.

The angle cut gears would probably be the first to suffer without oil , and the new cost would probably exceed the price of the rebuilt secondhand box.

I think all R80 and R100 boxes are interchangeable but gear ratios will probably differ between models (e.g. RT, GS, ST etc.)
A monolever box will fit a paralever but you will need to change the output oil seal.

Rob Farmer is the man to talk to. He knows far more about these things than I do.

The gearbox in my 1978 R80/7 has done 160,000 miles, 257,000km if my calculation is correct, without being touched

.......but I do have a spare on the bench which has only done 100,000 just in case .

I rode Crapaud's R100GSPD http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236258 a couple of mouths ago which had a rebuilt gearbox by James Sherlock's, it was the sweetest gearbox I have ever know in an Airhead.

I decided to buy a reconditioned gearbox from Motorworks.

Since I will take the old one out I will be able to see and analyse the clutch.

What should I analyse? And what parts should I also change since I will have the chance…

Do you have any advices to all this operation?

Ps: I have some experience in this kind of operations but most of it is with land rovers and not with bikes.

Its all about Patience really.
(You will be ok especially as you are ok with Landrovers). !

Re the clutch, look on this site and there will be a page somewhere re measurements and tolerances (or a workshop manual).
Mark everything so it goes back in the same place/position as it came off.
Take the opportunity to lubricate all the splines on the clutch/gearbox input shaft, and the little bearing on the clutch pushrod at the rear of the gearbox too.
My GS clutch has just been inspected and its pretty much perfect, after 62,000 miles !

I have re-built four Airhead boxes - two for members of this forum - and it wouldn't be difficult to renovate your old one. Drop me a PM if you want it done (cost of parts only).

Regarding the clutch - remember that it is held together with stretch bolts that should really be replaced with new ones.

it wasn't till the late 80'ties that they left out the circlip, I had mine rebuild(and circlip added ) at 87.000 still fine now at 276.000. so clearly the problem is the circlip.
also fitted a bosch starter at this point (to replace the valeo joke) also still going.

According to my not very accurate bathroom scales a kick start box weighs just under 12 kg, with no oil, push rod lever or push rod etc.

Bernard not sure how mechanical apt you are but to be honest if you know how to pull and refit a bearing on a shaft and replace an oil seal you can do it yourself with some patience.

I rebuilt a GS box before in a basement with limited tools. The hardest part is getting the flange off the output shaft. The rest is reasonably easy to do with some questions on here and a haynes manual.

That was my first idea. Dismantle and rebuilt the gearbox myself. But my main problem is the lack of available time to dedicate to the bike.

Motorworks will pay me 90 quid if they receive the old gearbox….but I’ll probably have to pay around 50 euros to send it to the UK.

Since new bearings cost around 65 euros the most reasonable thing to do it keep the old one and rebuilt it myself when I’ll find the time…
