Hello chaps, what lovely weather were having at the moment, hence the reason i bought a gerbing heated jacket liner from barnstohmers the other day and enquired about wiring it to the bike as my old exo waistcoat plug straight into the aux socket under the seat, job done,

the guys at barnstohmers said that the can bus system cant handle the draw of the vest and it has to be wired straight to the battery?

is this the case or can i buy the bmw lead that gerbing sell and plug straight into the aux socket? or is this designed for bikes pre can bus?

only asking as dont like to plug things straight into the battery without being wired to the ignition as i get paranoid that the battery will go flat!

cheers in advance!

if it draws more than 7amp, then the canbus will shut down the aux. socket.

the EXO2 vest only draws 4.2amp IIRC.

I thought the CANbus spat it's dummy at 5 amps??

i thought it was 7, but i might be wrong.

whichever it is, i suspect bahnstormers know, and that they also know the gerbing draws more.

edit: a bit of research says you are right, the cut off is indeed 5 amps :)

I've got a 06 12GSA and a Klan (old style) Jacket that I'm pretty sure I run on the CanBus along with an Autocom in the same socket (been a long time since I set it up so need to check)

All that said, I thought the point of the Canbus shutting the port down was for protection, doesnt it just rest when you restart?

I have the Gerbring jacket and at least on a k1200s the canbus shuts it down. I would assume the canbus is the same on different models. Nippy Norman sells kit which includes new socket wiring and fuse to connect directly to the battery.

Not much chance of the Gerbing making yoru battery go flat... unless you are in the habit of getting off your bike by first taking off your jacket.... =)

Al...

I fitted a centech fuse panel on a switched circuit to my 1200 RT - no problems running gerbings insoles, gloves and jacket at full welly. At 4000 rpm, voltage shown on voltmeter at battery is 14.1v :thumb

I think most of the heated jacket use 5 and a bit amps or more. So I would have thought most will stopped by the CANbus system.

The other advantage of hard wiring a second accessory socket is that you can use it for other things too.

The Gerbing pulls a maximum of 6.5A, and (on 05 at least) GSs the Canbus cuts out anything drawing more than 5A.

Centech is good, and lets you run stuff directly off the battery without trying to get many connections on the battery, perhaps a battery charger, heated vest, USB power and room for more. If you want to run the Gerbing kit only then wire it direct to the battery, remembering to fit a fuse very close to the Gerbing positive lead. I seem to remember the Gerbing direct wiring kit has such a fuse.

It's called 'powerlet'.
Do a google for it.
You can often get them on e-bay but shop around as the price varies hugely !
