Gert’s Funeral

Den and Ronno have said it all, a grand day out for all the wrong reasons.

I did a quick head-count at the Service and reckoned there were about 250 people there, which says a lot about the man.

Packer showed us all up of course :blast

He turned up on his bike in full (non-heated) riding gear, took part in the procession, then, James Bond style, removed the outer clothing to reveal a dark suit :clap

Was there a carnation in the buttonhole ??, I can't remember and I had foolishly left my camera in the pannier :blast

Good effort Kevan :thumb

The snow had cleared on the Eastern side for my run home, I hope all those from the West also had dry ice-free roads.

Bob.

I can't add anything that hasn't already been said.

Very moving to see so many bikes joining the big fella on his final journey...

Lovely service..

Hope all that where traveling back home tonight had a safe one.

Naw

My lasting memory of the service will be the great strength of Anette and Gert’s daughters. He would have been a very proud man.

Well organised, Thanks to Gerry for the coffee and bacon rolls.
Bhud must be exhausted, what great friend to have had.
I wish I had known Gert better.
A truly fitting send off to the “twat in the hat.” :beerjug:

I left the house at 2am to catch a ferry from N Irel. I must admit I had a few second thoughts.

I'm on the ferry home now .... And I'm really glad I got to send Gert off in the manner befitting him.

I even toasted the Twat in a Hat at 2010 hours, 20th of the 10th, 2010.

It was good knowing you Gert!

What a great turnout for Gert, I know Anette was very proud. I couldn't make it from the Heliport to my house and then to the Funeral Parlour for the ride in with Gert so had to go direct to the Crematorium. As has been said it was wall to wall with friends and colleagues from the last 10 years since I first met Gert and Gerts family and friends from Holand.

Anette had invited us back to the family home and again it was great to see so many there. For those that had travelled so far and had to leave after the service it was a shame as the banter was good and it was good to get time to speak to Gerts Family and neighbours.

Anette was amazing and so courageous throughout the day and I'm sure will be shattered by now.

Gert was taken from us early but his memory will live on.

RIP Gert

It's all already been said...nearly

Bhud told us the Gert left us with his GS keys in his hand. Then, Annette, pondering over what else to place in the coffinplaced in the flowers from their wedding day and....
...a Touratech catalogue:D

What a wondeful day it was, for all the wrong reasons.

Whilst slugging it home through a torrential freezing downpour, I was thinking back to when I first met Annette and Gert. It was at the 09 GOTC when they came on the rideout around Sutherland. We'd all met up at the petrol station in Ullapool and I was rattling through the list of names to ensure we didn't set off without anyone.

I got to 'Nakambale and Annette' and realised I didn't know how to pronounce 'Nakambale' - it certainly didn't sound Dutch....errr...
...so I simply said "Err Mr and Mrs Nak? They both grinned and I thought no more about it.....
...until my ride home, that is.

It was revealed in the service that Gert said that 'Nakambale' is African for 'the twat in the hat'.
So it would appear that, upon my first encountering these two wonderful people, I may have called them "Mr and Mrs Twat".:blast

I've got to say, it cheered me up no end on the wet, freezing ride home.:D

Ride on, Gert.

A lovely and moving service, it was good to learn so much about Gert. I fell apart when I saw the grief stricken faces of Anette and his daughters as they filed out.

Later at the house Anette showed me a book that Gert had created as a record of their travels in Namibia, full of amazing photography, absolutely superb. He was also part way through creating a new book to record the Calum's Road ride. I think that Anette may be talking to the other riders with a view to finishing the book as a memorial to Gert. If she feels that she is able to do this I for one would buy a copy.

An excellent attendance by both ukgser and nae fanny bar members in rather chilly weather.

Its nice to know motorbikers from all over the british isles are willing to come considerable distances celebrate the life of someone who they know only through the two organisations mentioned above.

There must have been a hundred or so other family and friends already seated when the durty bikers traipsed in.

Bhud was the pall bearer with squeeky boots I think.
He also arranged coffee and bacon rolls prior to the funeral in a local club. What a star.

A humanist service, detailing the life of Gert (what an interesting and varied life) was held.

Hope everybody got home ok.

Lets not be having to do it again in the near future.

Sums it up to a T there Den

A wonderful and fitting memorial to Nakambale. It was a touching tribute that was well organised. Well done Dave and all concerned.

Who's got some nice pictures/stories of Gert de Jonge?

I think it was a great way to say goodbey. Gert would have loved it this way.

For those who have nice pictures of Gert, I created a website where they can be uploaded (and downloaded). This website is http://gallery.me.com/douwevt#100241. Please feel free to put anything you think Anette or Gert's daughters would like on it and I'll make sure they get it somehow. If possible in a quality that makes it possible to print it.

If you have a nice story of how you knew Gert, please let me know so I can create a book of memories for them.

Thank you all.
Best regards,
Douwe

great stuff. I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback. :beerjug:

Kelvin charged £4.50 a skull for only 28 bodies by way of discount. I was charging £5 and hoping to generate a small surplus to pass on to Gerts charity--one lad gave me a tenner and refused change. There isnt a surplus yet, but thats my fault; it just didnt seem appropriate to go round wringing money. Can't really explain but thats how I felt. Now however----------!!

I have thanked Norman and Kelvin for their efforts -- it was one of my better ideas!!

Kelvin has made the offer that if any NFBers/UKGSers are passing he would love to sign them in for tea/coffee/buns -- might be a good place to meet up for a run --but mebbee in the summer-- the roads where I was yesterday were absolutely awful--theres a crease up the middle of my bike seat and my erse has blisters from gripping!!

What a very moving day it was, and showed how much Gert was liked and respected by the amount of people who attended, it was an honour to ride with him and the rest of you on the day, I felt proud to be a part of it !

People travelled from far and wide in some pretty bad weather, Sid came all way from Devon, and Stevie made a 24 hour round trip to be there, a great effort to name but two.

Bhud was a great help to Gerts family and many others since the accident, he helped people when he must have wanted to have some time alone, he was a good friend of Gerts and shows what a man he is, I feel proud to call him a friend of mine !

Just a few of my thoughts about the day.

Has anyone managed to upload a photo, I've tried and I get a blank box when being asked to select a file for upload?

You may have too old a version of the explorer or so. I've added another option so that you can add photo's by sending an email. Please let me know if it still doesn't work. I tried it with an Apple and it worked.

Best Regards,
Douwe
