Motorcycle rims | alloy wheels
You are well advised to contact us before choosing a variety of motorcycle rims. The availability of the rim rings in the correct number of holes, size and delivery time decides more than the intended use. In the alternative search we need to help you. There are many offers and lists on the Internet, but often nothing is available. We may be able to procure what we do not have from large colleagues! Also, you should not compare the concentricity of round-shaped, welded rim profiles (Behr, Excel, Sanremo, Morad ...) with cast wheels from motorsport. A 100% perfect concentricity is not possible with wire spoke rims, because they were not over-turned by CNC. An exception are the BMW cross-spoke rims from the company GLM from Asia, which, however, are hard to come by

I was looking at a 2018 GSA Rallye TE in a dealers today - thick end of £18k OTR

Sure looked glitzy and fancy, however now I just wonder how much substance is under the outward style and pzazz

Watch all the China trolls come out now, typical morons. Just because they are made in China, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them. They would be made to a spec as BMW requires.

I agree.

But what if they were made to a cost cutting specification, which could now fail?

I checked my rims 2 weeks ago and found one completely loose spoke on the front wheel. There were about 3 spokes on the rear wheel that needed slightly more tension.

The retaining grub screw was missing completely on the front lose spoke.

If for example, these cheap retaining grub screws were falling out allowing the spokes to became loose?..... especially if they were being lubricated by ACF50 to stop rust?

WTF?

Also, just looking at the video again briefly.

The camera bike speedo isn't operational. But they were overtaking everything in the outside lane, so must have been doing 80-90 mph.

The crashed bike is heavily loaded (overweight?) and having to deal with high speed wind resistance on knobbly tyres for long periods of time.

So the weight and vibration on the rear wheel must be a lot.

It is unlikely to have been overweight ridden solo, no matter how much luggage. The payload of these bikes is around 220 Kg, so even if the rider was way above average weight, at say 120 Kg, he is not going to have 100 Kg of luggage. High speeds on full knobbly tyres however might have been inadvisable.

That is not good

Not a good thing at all

Can you buy grub screws ?

Never had that on 20 years of riding oilhead GS 's with spoke wheels in over 100k of riding

German made Behr wheels are very strong

Yes, you can buy the items seperately

- The spoke
- The Adjuster Bolt
- The Retaining Grub Screw

BMW listed the grub screw at £1.00 but my dealer ordered it free of charge.

So, check torques of caliper bolts , mark with anti tamper paint, check spoke tensions ( tinkety tink) , check for missing grub screws . That covers it eh ?

+ Spin rear wheel and check clearance from all spokes to caliper body every now and then. Make sure wheel is true.

Good to know, soon be sorted and back on the road

Don’t go thinking that BMW have just changed rims; My 2014 WC GSA has GLM spoked rims!
Don’t go thinking that this is a one off incident, as reported by others in this thread plus GorrillaGS reported a similar incident in a seperate thread in 2013
I’ve just checked all 40 grub screws and all present and correct as they should be . ( It’s a simple job , but also a bar steward when the heads are sealed with rock hard mud ) . Each spoke has a diameter 3.44mm for anyone wishing to be anal about specifications .
Again OP, where’s the forensics ? ; any grub screws missing on the crashed bike? ; IT’S AN EASY ANSWER

Aha, a quick Google shows GLM as a Chinese firm............ called 'Giant Light Metal' Technologies, a subsidiary of Giant bicycles maybe??

Nice, on a £19000 motorcycle:blast

Giant Light Metal GLM is a wholly owned subsidiary of Giant Manufacturing Co. Ltd from Taiwan , with an annual production capacity of 50K ton of aluminium extrusion products , certified for ISO9001, IATF 16949, AS9100 and ISO14001.
They are not only the world’s largest manufacturer of men’s bikes ( “ bloody good bikes, “says my semi pro cyclist mate ), but they make so much more for other makes; Scott,Trek, Colnago etc and are “The best kept secret in the bike business,” quoting the US general manager. In nutshell the company are massive .
I think you are being a little unfair if you are dissing our GLM wheels

p.s. I am disappointed about the lack of updates from OP in this seriously concerning thread that he started.
