I may need to travel from the icy wastes of the midlands to gold paved Londinium on 19 May when there is a tube strike on.

My destination is about 2 min walk from Moorgate tube station which is 4 stops and ~15mins from Euston. I need to arrive (near Moorgate) at 09.30 and leave ~17.30. I like a walk about London but it's about an hour each way to walk and with trains etc, there just isn't time unless I leave home at silly o'clock. I suspect buses (which I usually prefer anyway) will be overrun.

In short, how much extra time (approx) would you learned locals allow on strike days or would you just avoid like the plague?

Strike might be cancelled at the 11th hour.
Euston to Moorgate, if you are inclined, can be a Lime ride (elec bike). I'd pre-book.

I'd avoid or reschedule if I were in you.

I'm going on Thursday, my connection at kk is 90 mins afterl I arrive at London vic

Guess who won't be making that connection,

So now I have to get a train 2 hrs earlier which gives me 2 hours to get the connection, and I've got a fucked leg and all my bike gear to lug across London.

If I miss my connection the next train goes an hour later but I don't get to my destination untill 11pm

To get a cheaper train fare I need to book advances fixed time singles (~£90 as opposed to ~£300 for a flexible return) so that limits reliance on the strike being called off. I did consider a hire bike but didn't want to arrive sweaty. A leccy one might reduce that and noted re pre-booking although I can foresee my pre-booked bike being absent or unusable :blast :D Your suggestion of avoid or reschedule is useful - many thanks :thumb2 It's a rarely run course so reschedule isn't easy but there might be alternate options with other providers ... 🤔

have you contacted the training outift? They might postpone it if attendees and trainers are likely to be delayed.

Ye electric ones are non-sweaty.

Service is hit and miss, and the costs ridiculously high for what it is. But useful in some cases.

Just put your intended 19 May journey into Google Maps and select public transport.

From the options, select the time that you wish to arrive at your final destination from wherever it is you are starting from. I presume that is Newcastle under Lyme, but it will work just as well from Aberdeen or Penzance or plain old Euston station.

Google Maps (which is pretty much ‘live’, up-to-date and reliable) will spell it all out for you.

Do the same for your return journey.

It doesn’t need to be more complicated than that.

I have just used Google Maps for a journey across London from Turnham Green to Wapping, to arrive at Wapping at 12:30 today and another separate journey for this evening from Wapping across town to Wandsworth, to arrive at The Alma pub at 18:30. It spat out all the options for both journeys, neatly listed, in a fraction of a second. I’ll update the Wandsworth journey later this afternoon in case anything changes, as the app is all but ‘live’.

:beerjug:

PS I find Google Maps much more reliable and user friendly than TfL’s own website and app. It is very rare that it lets me down, no matter how complicated the door-to-door journey across London might be, nor what time of day (or night) I might be travelling.

Mrs M is en-route to The Smoke right now.

She will walk the 2.3 miles from Euston to her destination (as she always does).
