Too many folk are scared to stand out from the crowd. Accordingly they strike out at those who aren't as they are reminded of their fear.
I suspect that very often those same people are a part of the "all the gear no idea" crowd and think that motorcycling is all about a two or three hour run on a sunny summers day. They will spend hours with sandpaper roughing up the edges of their tyres to try and hide the chicken strips.
There may be a bit of jealousy involved as well as they perceive the BMW brand to be expensive and beyond their means

Get a few of your jap riding mates and take em on a tour of the local country lanes - it soon shuts them up when they see what a GS can do round the twisties and suddenly everyone wants to have a ride! especially when its the 1100 - don't know much about these new 1200s as they always seem to be breaking down
