On my 2008 GSA I undid the spring holding bracket on the centre stand, this increased the length the spring would reach. Then I could simply slip the other end of the Spring on to its mounting point, do the bracket back up and job done.
I confess this method wasn't my first option but after running out of swear words and skin on my knuckles I decided to think it though and all became clear
