Givi Airflow Screen review

Aside from that, I put the Tobs on with the AF330. I was very happy with the screen but, the Tobs are even better. Smooth AND quiet. I bought the Tobs out of curiosity and am glad I did.

Are you using BMW (or someone else's) wings too?

Can I talk you into either posting or sending (alexol at cox-internet dot com) a photo with the Tobs, please?

I know this is a really subjective question, but what difference did you feel between the AF alone and with the Tobs?

Thanks,

Alex

My Givi Airflow on order and will arrive this week (after wasted time and much annoyance with a NN high-wide) so thanks to all who have posted on this thread for the great reviews and giving me the confidence to buy!

It's the OE BMW one, so you should be able to buy it from your official BMW dealers - about £70 for the crossbar, power lead and GPS mounting bracket. Much neater than the aftermarket solutions IMHO and doesn't obscure the clocks :thumb2

Awesome thanks for the help, it does look very tidy. I have the small TT and it blocks the clocks. I thought it would be OK but its driving me nuts!

Thanks again

Hiya Alex

I am using the BMW winglets. I tried the AF w/out and I found it considerably worse. Others have posted different results but I found it much smoother with them on. They just fit and I have a 2010gs which has the small bracket beneath the fairing which helped me in lining up the wings.

The difference with the Tobs on is not huge but I have found I can cruise at ABOVE 110km/h comfortably with them on. I was cruising comfortably about 110 without the Tobs.

I find the screen laid back a little, cuts the air better and allows the top part of the AF to smooth the air a little better. I am really using the Tobs to lay the screen back more. I am sure the extra air behind the screen is having a positive effect too, reducing the difference in pressure behind the screen.....

I will try get some pics up in the next couple o days..... They do look tidy, just two strips of aluminum running along the outside of the brace that exists on the bike.

Cheers

Pete

Great! Thanks...

It sounds as if your experiences parallel mine - I found the AF substantially worse than what I had before (CalSci) without the wings, and adding the wings made a HUGE difference. If I hadn't experienced that difference first hand I wouldn't have believed it from anyone else, there was that great a change.

To me the big issue on the GSs (I had one of the red & white "supertanker" PDs quite some time ago) has always been the distance between rider & screen. It seems logical that there's an improvement to be had by laying back the screen a bit

I'd like to see your pics anyway, but it sounds like time to go slap the ol' piggy-bank again...

Alex

Oh no! Now I'm really confused!

Hi All,

New to the forum, first post, so please be gentle with me!:type

I've just got an 05 R1200GS and the screen is my current project. Having read all the AF330 comments, I haven't the foggiest way to go now. :nenau

I am 6' 4" tall (1.92m) longish in the body and legs (obviously!) and the standard unit is a real bother. I have tried the MRA vario and this is ok-ish but didn't do it for me (performance or looks....I am vain and shallow too). I am about to try the TT gadget add-on thingy.

I want smooth flow and consistent noise. I wear plugs. At present the standard screen gives be relatively smooth flow but I get an obscure lower pitch 'brrr' in my left ear only. Bizarre.

Am I just now simply going through the time-honoured motions of early, naive, GS ownership by coughing up dosh on pointless farkles?

I may just take the screen off and see what it's like without it - when I stand up on the pegs fully, at speed (don't do this at home kids!), it's bloody wonderful.

Help.

Please.

John

One thing I like about the AirFlo is that if you get the screen adjusters on just the right tension you can actually adjust the height on the move. A one handed wiggle (ooh eer missus) . Nice and high for the motorway and low down with plenty of vision for town work.

Does the job for me:clap:clap

Hi Gang, Cieran here, first of all thanks to all of you who have bought the AF330 screens, with a special thanks to Advanced_Biker for the great pictures and the write up. We have done so well that we have cleared out all our stock and all the stock in the GiIVI UK warehouse. I do have more on backorder from Italy that should be here next tuesday ( fingers crossed). There are plenty of other Givi bits that I could offer UKGSer discount on, all the Givi accessories for the R1200 GS can be found here ( http://www.givi.co.uk/My-motorcycle/?ma=BMW&mo=R-1200-GS-04--09 :type ) i especially think that the TN689 Engine guards and SR689 topbox rack should go pretty well, they also have just released a very trick quick release fitting kit for the monokey panniers ( PLR684 ) but i could do with your advice before i commit to ordering any sort of quantitys of them. What do you think guys? Has anyone had any of these? All feedback good or bad welcome.

Thanks again for your support:clap

Hi guys,

I came upon this forum while being on a long quest battling the buffeting
on my beloved 2008 R1200GS. I am 187cm which would be 6,13 if i got it right and off course the standard screen doesn't do the trick...

September last year i bought the Wünderlich Ergo. It gave me some improving but only marginal. Therefore, i added tobinators. Yet again: marginal benefit.

This summer i will make a big trip from Amsterdam to Ukraine. I need to get things right for that one because my ears can't stand it anymore; even with plugs the buffeting is horrible and i allready suffer from tinnitus.

As a first step, reading all experiences on many forums, i ordered the winglets.
As far as i can judge it; they will never harm the experience. As a second step i will order the Givi AF330; problably mounted with the tobinators also.

I have a good feeling that this combination must finally do the trick since you have so many possibilities to change positions and make adjustments.

I only have a urgent question for mrpc since he has a combination of both the AF330 and the tobs: how firm is the windshield with the tobs on and in general? I will ride some REAL rough roads this summer and having my screen bumped off would be like a real nigthmare to me. Can you reassure me that the combination will do fine under
some more "road" pressure. As a comparison: the Ergo-screen was such a big football-field that even driving over a speedbumper here in Holland caused it to shake dangerously.

I look forward for your comment and hope you can kick in a picture real soon! :thumb2

One more question for the ones who installed the winglets themselves: i have a 2008 so it's prepared for the installation but is it possible to just drill from
down to the upside or do you need to remove the wings first?

Thanks for your feedback!

Happy trails,
Connick

Great!

That will make it a 10 minute job; i allready feared
removing the whole fairing... :thumb

Hi Connick

What a fantastic trip you are planning, and I would do it with my current screen and Tobs.

I have a '10 with the bracket for the wings, so I had to move a relay that lives in this area (I had it put there for the driving lights, and thought it would outta the way....) but, I drilled from the bottom to get the holes in the right spot. Definitely worth doing.

I took the bike out today and rode about 200km over some rough tar with the Tobs on the AF330. No problems with them loosening up and letting the screen go. I am getting almost no buffeting up to about 140km/h, then I duck down a little but it is nothing anywhere near bad! I do get some wind noise but not that horrible low booming. I wear plugs anyway so does not bother me at all.

Like I posted earlier, the Tobs are not essential with this screen. They do make it better though. I would buy the Tobs AND this screen again if I had to....

My advice would be get the wings AND the AF330, see how you feel then get the Tobs if you cant get it just right. Like you posted, then you will have EVERY possible option covered.

Follow the links to the the pics.

Cheers

Pete

Hey Pete,

Big thanks for the pictures AND the good news concerning
drilling and the screen in combi with the tobs!

Today i made the order for the screen, the winglets will
also arrive soon and i guess i leave the tobs in place since
they are allready in position and since they give me a little
bit of an Ikea feeling (only to be installed once :augie )
they will stay there; especially after your reinsurance about
stability and function.

Everything is slowly getting in place, i also expect my SW-motech
stuff soon: electrical tankring, the electrical city-tankbag with a
gps mount so i can use my Iphone as a GPS-device and feed
it with current at the same time; lovely stuff at SW-motech!

Enjoy the rides in Oz, again thanks for the feedback and have a nice weekend!
Connick

Watch your speed.....

Now getting used to the screen and what a great decision it was to fit one. One point ......No sense of speed, all that wind noise has gone.KEEP AN EYE on that speedo......
