Givi Airflow Screen review

I've had my airflow on for a week now,, i've done around 200 miles, what i found was that although the wind noise was significantly reduced, and below 75 mph almost non existent, i had horrendous buffeting, it was like i had a chinook hovering above me.. i adjusted it a million times but couldn't get rid of the constant hammering on the top of my helmet (oo-er!!),, even tried different helmets, no change.. before i chucked the thing in the hedge, i took off the fairing winglets to see if it would make a difference, and hey presto the buffeting has completely gone, still no wind noise either, and i can ride visor up all day at any speed, and still hear Morrissey belting out classic after classic on my ipod!.. a must have bit of kit me thinks!.. btw i'm 5' 10" low seat blah blah blahdy blah..

Thanks.... No winglets then

another opinion

Well, my mind's not fully made up but I may go back to my Ergo screen.

I really did think this screen was the answer, with no earplugs in and visor up there is little buffeting and wind noise up to 55-60mph, if anything the engine noise is greater, it seems to be reflected up and back more - quite nice. But, I am an earplug wearer, essential after years spent next to a Marshall stack with the volie knob at 11, as soon as I get up to speed I start to find it uncomfortable. I don't know whether it's buffeting or whether my ear plugs aren't in properly, it's like the airspace left between plugs and inner ear is banging and reverberating away, amplified even - very odd. I have the screen canted back as far as poss, lowest notch, and the adjustable bit on the lowest setting, if it's any higher the noise/buffeting sensation increases. And i have spent time going up and down the same two-mile stretch of Mway checking the lower screen at all angles from upright to canted back.

One key indicator for me is that the Ergo screen:visor-just-open combo gets uncomfortable at around 45-50, too much reverberation so I have to close up fully, no prob with the Givi.

I would have thought that the gap between lower and upper half would have helped decrease the vacuum behind the screen but judging by the way my fairly heavy leather key fob always ends up facing away from me it's just as bad?

In essence I think this screen is great for speeds up to 55-65 and the ability to vary the height of the top half down (and take it off when green-laning?) is really useful. But I'm not convinced about Mway cruising in the 80-90 region. Although the Ergo screen is a bit of a barn door my impression of it is that it's a better compromise all round. I suppose I should try running at speed without earplugs, for comparison?

I have an hour's run down the M3 this weekend, I'll give it another chance before swopping back to the Ergo and doing a similar run for comparison.

I'm 5'9.5", normal seat, lowest setting, Schuberth S1, chin vent open only. My tw'pennorth, hope this helps.

As described by an earlier poster, bought direct from Italy for 135 euro inc. delivery (£122.71 at the time).

I'm also after a Givi so if anybody decides they don't like theirs PLEASE drop me a line :augie

keep in touch JumpJim, I'm putting my Ergo back on again for comparison. Having said that, my run down the M3 wasn't too bad but confirms (for me) that it's an excellent screen up to 60 but does my head in a little above that - at least that's what my perception is compared to the Ergo, which is why I need to test it again.

Oooh, and now I'm testing the newly uprated Tourance EXP M, was going for old style Tourance but matey at Micheldever tyres recommended new versions, it seems Metzeler have listened to the gripes about relatively poor mileage in comparison to the old-style Tourance (from which I got 9500 miles).

Just come back from Normandy and on day one rode from Soke on Trent to the Eurotunnel and the straight to Normandy, about 550 miles. Arrived refreshed and at times rode with my visor up. No buffeting at all, but a hell of a lot of wind noise, with the BMW original screen next to highest setting. If I leaned forward slightly, no noise.
I await your report......

Nigel

Roads and weather great:

I watched the vid you put up, great watch. I am always curious to know how other riders do/think through things. Great roads too!

I have been messing around with the AF330 for the last couple of days to and from work. The riding is mostly freeway and traffic..... moving quickly. I have found (for me anyway) the best position is with the screen laid down as much as possible, and I have (atm) got the top half of the Givi about 3cm higher than its lowest setting.

I get wind noise but, I stood up at about 95kmh and the noise was greater standing than it is in the seat. So I suppose the screen is cutting out and smoothing the air. All in all I am very happy with the screen. I do wear plugs but they are optional for me with this screen on. I am getting next to zero buffeting.

I think the trick is to lay the thing down to smooth the air, not stop it all together. I did find with the top of the Givi up all the way, it got WAY too still and strange feeling. I like to have air flow, as long as its smooth.

I can definitely live with this setup but I am wondering if it will be better if the screen was laid back further, so I have a set of Tobs coming from NN.... I will post if anyone is interested.

I tried the Givi w/out the winglets. That lasted till I got home (about 20 mins) and I put em straight back on. HUGE difference!

For what its worth I am 6'2, 32 inseam and have the seat set high front and back. I have the std r1200gs 2010.

Cheers

Hello Pete

Many thanks for the feedback, looking like a purchase is coming on,

Regards

Nigel

We had a 150 miles rideout this afternoon and the Givi does seem to be an improvement on standard, both for rider and pillion. I have it leant back as far as possible and about 2" above the lowest position (5'8.5", but long torso/stumpy legs :P ). The wind is clearing my helmet by about 4" at either side.

Givi AF330 for £127.49 for UKGSer Members

Hi, first of all great forum, I have always wanted a GS but my pockets we only deep enough for a lowley Aprilia Caponord!!
I here on the most part out of interest in the big BMW’s however there is a sly underhanded bit of guerrilla marketing I’d like to get out of the way.
In my day job I work for DK Motorcycles in Staffordshire ( they have been mentioned a few time previously in this thread) I am the person responsible for the Givi stock and I have just put a quantity of the AF330’s in stock. The retail is a touch over £150 but we are selling them on eBay here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Givi-AF330-BM...em&pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item51924686ac) at £137.49 plus £5.95 post. However as an exclusive offer to my fellow UKGSer.com members I can offer you one over the phone with an additional £10 discount and free post to mainland UK. Making it £127.49 delivered to your door. I am also always happy to help out fellow riders with any other luggage or service parts with exclusive offers for UKGSer forum members.
Thanks Gang

That's where I bought mine from, but with Paypal's crappy exchange rates it worked out at £123.

I don't think £127.49 is a bad price to pay to support a British business :nenau

Hi, first of all great forum, I have always wanted a GS but my pockets we only deep enough for a lowley Aprilia Caponord!!

I made that mistake once - couldn't live with the soggy handling, temperamental FI and deafening windblast :( A Givi screen improved the noise a bit, but the handling destroyed my confidence - it was like a 70's superbike with a 100bhp 140mph engine in a chassis which couldn't cope

Another screen option

Tried the AF330 but really like the 'Cee Baileys' alternative. For those who haven't researched CB they are a American aircraft plastics manufacturer based in California I think. They are a little on the expensive side but top quality & they do come up on flea bay every now & then, I got my GS screen new from FB for £125 & there are some UK stockists on the net.
There are 4 different screen heights, 2 different widths & 4 colours with a recommended height of screen to your height on their web-site.
I am 6'0" tall so opted for the 20" screen as they recommend, this screen doesn't need the support bracket & there is little or no wobble even at silly speeds. Wind noise & buffeting is greatly reduced & CB also do the winglets but the yanks call them something different, wind wings I think.
I have compared the CB to the NN & the givi, for me the CB is made of a much better quality plastics but I would expect this from a specialist aircraft plastics company.
Anyway just for information ...

Bought one from D K Motorcycles

Fitted the Givi Aeroflow Screen - What a difference

After watching this forum develop and read all the posts, I decided to purchase the Givi Aeroflow screen from D K Motorcycles, thaks Cieran for the discount.
Took the plunge yesterday afternoon and fitted the sceen. Instructions not too bad, if you remember to use all the rubbers off the original screen - Everything else straight forward.
The verdict - What a big difference, not noise round the helmet and at legal speed I can ride with my visor up now. Brilliant screen, with settings at, lower screen at lowest setting, top sliding screen, half way.

Here are some pics:

Sorry for the stoopid question... Where did you get that GPS bar? I have been looking for that! TT??? Cant seem to get it here in Australia.

Aside from that, I put the Tobs on with the AF330. I was very happy with the screen but, the Tobs are even better. Smooth AND quiet. I bought the Tobs out of curiosity and am glad I did.

Not sure if it is more air behind the screen softening the "vacuum" or a flatter screen. I have the tob on lowest setting, the screen set as low as possible using the BMW black hand adjusters and the top of the Givi about 4cm from lowest.

Thanks in advance

It's the OE BMW one, so you should be able to buy it from your official BMW dealers - about £70 for the crossbar, power lead and GPS mounting bracket. Much neater than the aftermarket solutions IMHO and doesn't obscure the clocks :thumb2
