Does anyone know whether you can fit a Givi E52 top box in conjunction with Gobi panniers?

Just received my Blue, Black, Black 1200 GS today and looking for luggage.

Cheers

I used the Givi E52 Topbox on my old 1150 without problems. I have decided against using it on th 1200 since I have read reports that the leading edge at the hinge point overhangs the back of the pillion seat thereby reducing room. My wife would not be happy with that! I am currently using the BMW top box and panniers, but find that the topbox is way too small and restrictive, even in it's expanded state. I can't even close the lid shut with my Shoei full face lid in it, let alone stach 2 lids away safely when we leave the bike. BMW I believe have'nt done a very good job in designing this box, although I feel the panniers are much better than the ones for the 1150. This leaves me with a dilemma of which topbox I should use. I've recently been looking at the H&B luggage, especially the Gobi and more interestingly the Aluminium Exclusive range. The Alu. Excl. TC45 looks as if it will hold two lids at a push. Does anyone out there have any experience of the TC45 and will it take two lids. Also how good is the mounting and will it take a full 10 Kg. which I believe is the max load the rear rack can take. Answers please.

Hi Cooch,

I've got H&B Gobi's and the standard BMW topbox fitted, if that's any help?

I have the Givi Maxia E52 box fitted with std BMW R12 panniers fitted, the givi conversion plate lifts the E52 up and back and i cant see why you'd have a problem fitting any of the H&B panniers around that set up, if you want a pic of the bike showing the E52 with the BMW panniers fitted to give you an idea of the spacing and layout let me know and i'll email you some pics.

The bike feels very stable with all the luggage fittted at speeds so far of up to 110mph fully loaded, the E52 also takes 2 Schuberth Concept helmets side by side with relative ease when i park up and want a wander.

Thanks WM, I think you've convinced me that Givi E52 is the way to go. I think the Givi top plate is better looking and more secure than the H&B setup.

For helmets, you can always use the under-seat hooks put there for the purpose.;)

Gobi Panniers

Thanks all for your replies. One further question. I see from the H&B website that the Gobi Panniers for right and left sides are the same - 37 litres. How does this co-exist (on the left side) with the 1200 GS exhaust? Also what about the heat from the exhaust on the Gobi pannier?

Thanks again

Cheers

Hi Cooch,

I have the same size panniers on each side and, as a result of the exhaust location, the left hand one protrudes further out than the rught side, so if you look at the bike from the rear it looks a little 'lob sided'. However the panniers offer a very useable interior space.

I looked at Metal Mule products at the NEC and thought they were fabulous, other than the inner construction. The problem's with the retaining bolt heads remain proud and therefore catches everything that you place in the pannier. You could of course cover these with a some ply but then you loose some space. As I place camera bags in my panniers then this fact would stop me from using the mules.

As for heat, well I've had no problems and there's no sign of scorching and the contents have always remained cool.

Reggie do you have any photo's of the Gobi frames you can post? I'm sure you've already posted photo's of them fitted, any idea where?

Thanks, John

Hi John,

as I'm not a site sponsor yet (should be within a couple of days) I can't post images or send PM's. Can you send me a PM or not? If you can let me have your e-mail address and I'll go out to the garage and take whatever shots you want now.

I would like to see some photos of your E52 top box with the BMW panniers. I am contemplating either the E52 or the E46 top box. My concern is that the E52 may be "too big". If you don't want to post the photos pls send them to RBartels2 at SATX.RR.COM Thanks
