After reading several posts re top boxes for the 12gs, I would like to keep my Givi. After requesting a bracket from my local dealer, there was a sharp intake of breath and I was asked if I really wanted the bracket as it would require drilling the BMW rear rack. On hearing this, I declined.
I checked the Givi website and it appears that the bracket is supported by a seperate frame, similar to that used be fitted my XJR1300. That did not require any drilling at all, it just bolted on.
Is this the same for the 12gs?

I can confirm bgregor's statement, i have had the givi rack fitted to the bike since new, there is no drilling and it is a doddle to fit, your dealer is either trying to pull the wool over your eyes or he doesnt know his arse from his elbow.

Welshmagician, i'm totally new to hard luggage, but have to say, i much prefer the Givi style luggage to the "metal tins" than seem to be favoured by most Gs'ers (no offence intended) could you tell me what "rack" i would need and also does any Givi box fit on the rack? Or do i need some kind of adapter?

thanks.....

To fit a Givi TopBox you will need the relevant Givi Adapter plate which fits onto the BMW rack. The adapter plate costs about £45 from Memory. Once this is fitted any of the Givi range will fit (apart from some of the low end of the range which I'm not sure).

Regarding fitting of the adapter plate, (Givi Part No SR684), there is no additional drilling however I had to gring away a few mm where the support bars pass underneath the rack which will take about 30 secs with a file or 2 secs with a grinder. See photo attached.

Givi also do pannier rails now and this will let you fit Givi Panniers however whne not fitted it doen't look as tidy as the BMW ones.

I'm a technical halfwit - and it took me 20 minutes to fit. Very good bits and the instructions aren't half bad. Great box and even matches the red/sliver colour scheme.

Can't post a pic as its on the old PC and I haven't transferred it over! ('cos, as you already know, I'm a technical halfwit.......)

Andy, someone has painted a big black arrow on the back of your bike!, seriously though that rack looks very tidy how do the prices of the boxes compare to the BMW tins?.

Here we go.....

I've just ordered my GS today (pauses to hear the crowd go wild) and have ordered the BMW panniers with it, i'm assuming (and hope some of you will confirm) that a Give adapter plate and Box will fit together with the BMW panniers.. ????

No Problem...

I've got the BMW panniers on mine with a GIVI box and theres no clash. The Givi Boxes come in at around £150-160 poiunds each however I got mine on a trip to Andorra for £90 about 3 years ago.

HAve Fun

Cheers Andy... will keep an eye out for a bargain at Ally Pally end of the month then :o)

I assume you just got the Givi adapter (£50 ish) to mount on the bmw standard rack?

Excuse the late response, the Givi plate to fit the R1200GS is SR684, it will take any of the Givi monokey range of boxes with no further adapter required.

Hope this helps. Cost via my local dealer was £58.64, but i reckon you could do better, my locl dealers a tight sod.
