Pretty pointless post i'm sure but thought i'd see if anyone had had the same issue and sorted it some how.

Currently in South of France at my old mans.

Keys bloody snapped in the lock of my Givi top box.

I got the key out but its locked and need to load it up on Sat morning.

Searched for locksmith to open so at least i could strap up for journey home but no luck.

Any one had this issue and able to open somehow, or is it a break the lock sort of problem?

Thanks for any comments.

when my daughters did this I left the broken key in the lock and was able to open it with a pair of pliers

then replaced the lock with one bought off ebay

Thanks for the idea Ian, unfortunately the key has broken too short, and unable to get it in the lock enough to turn before loosing any purchase i would have with pliers.

Not easy locks to pick, because of the design. Seven leaves and springs, 4 up 3 down.

The lock body is 20mm deep and 13mm wide, so I would suggest drilling it out. Don't go beyond these dimensions, as you will likely damage the metal plate the lock fits in which would be an added expense.

Hope this helps.:thumb2

Oh and the usual trick of driving in a self tapping screw and pulling on the lock barrel might not work, as the lock barrel is secured by a circlip.

But I guess if your desperate, anything goes.:thumb2

Thank you very much for your info Ian.

Will have another attempt of a semi local locksmith that may help and if not ill get the drill out i think.

Cheers

If all the bit that operates the lock is intact you could try welding a washer to the end of it so you can turn it. I did that to mine once.

Key

I had one that did this, the key snapped when fully inserted so I forced 2 stanley knife blades alongside the stub (either side) and gripped the blades with mole grips and had enough purchase to turn the stub.

when the key broke in my givi v46 I had to drill the lock , then replace the lock and key took that as a good time to rekey the panniers to the same keys too

a quick look 3 locks 36 quid

if you can extract the broken key then a blank if you have one to copy from mabey even broken key if its large enough to clamp is 3.50

if buying a lock/lockset make sure its the correct type for your case

Lever the plastic flap. Lid opens and no damage caused.

I don't know why they bother fitting a lock. :D

Thanks everybody for your advise, if all else failed today i would have tried all options prob steptoes first if its that simple, hope its not .

Anyway found a gent here in south France, he typed in key code into pc and 3 seconds later a machine cut it? just a local key shop.

Perfect fit for 8 Euros. :thumby:

Thanks again

Anyone know any companys that do this in the uk? I am in this situation and am desperate :(

Computer cutting key would be ideal !!!

Help !! :(

The locks are really pants. Just stick a screwdriver in and give it a twist.
Use bungees to secure it after.
Locks with keys for most givi boxes are about a tenner.

I'd come down and pick the lock for you but it'd cost more than the boxes.

Harolds in Sheffield managed to pick it,

its the newer lazer cut key, so they couldnt cut me one.

I've got a barrel and spare key coming next day, so going to fit that and take a spare key !!
