Have recorded rides for the past eight years. Have made every mistake one can make, and I continue to repeat them.
That said, while I mount the GoPro and Contour in various places, increasing I use the helmet mount. Don't stick the camera on top of the helmet... too weird and extreme p-o-v. For your side of the lanes, place the sticky mount on the lower right side of the helmet. Some of the advantages...
- Less vibration, and especially so when off-road.
- Gives the p-o-v of the rider... important for re-living what it was like to ride that road.
- Can optionally look around for the viewer... going over that bridge, around that lake, through that town, etc.
- Can dip the head towards the mirror to make sure it is recording.
- One helmet, any bike.
- Once you have the orientation set, tighten the knobs and never adjust it again. I have no need for an external screen.
I don't know about anyone else but i wouldn't trust a 'sticky-pad' to hold a camera (£175) out on a run, cause a bike creates G-forces and vibes that are quite extreme - & especially as, when its gone, its gone - the likely hood of finding it are almost zero because of the micro-size (unless its at night - then you could always look for the flashing red lights!)
ET GO HOME !!
I know what you mean the stickers adhesion is very powerful. Have you tried the suction pad 'thingy' ? that was impressive too, i used it green-laning in my Navara, on the outside (but again i took precations & had looped some wire to it too - as it just give that slight doubt in your mind that it MAY fail, which could turn out to be an expensive loss)
But i had no need to worry as it turns out !
Looks like their kit is weel thought out anf built to a high standard (ie non-Chinese)
Ive found the bar under the beak the best place to mount the GoPro (it's upside down but there is a funtion in the set up to invert the recording.
I tried it first on the cylinder protecter bars (it was the obvious & lazy option to attempt first) gave a very 'vibey' recording, which looks like a 'ripple effect' when viewed back.
The under beak position for the GoPro is not ideal - so i may be brave and try the helmet mount & just ignore the pointing, sniggering and schoolkids shouting 'Terminator' at me as i ride a 'world conquering' bike at 5mph through conjested Manchester in rush hour
