Guys
Had GS1200 for 9 months now, at present i have road tyres etc on. Getting bored with riding on road and feel the need to get some full on off road riding done. Anybody recommend some desent tryes that will have to cope with deep ruts and woodland tracks. Going to be doing some green laning as well. What others changes would you suggest i make to the bike to prepare it for off road riding?:bounce1

Continental TKC80's are a very good diual purpose tyre and will do more that most people are capable of.....they're crap in clay type slippery mud though and will clog up very quickly so be careful if you ride anything like that with them.

As far as other mods.....engine crash bars if you're going anywhere rocky, remove the BMW OEM foglights if they're fitted or at the first bump in the track, the crappy plastic flange they mount with will snap off:blast

Also pull out your footpeg rubbers and stick them in the kitchen odds and sods drawer....you'll get better grip on your boots with the rubbers out if there's any water/mud about.

Don't be too precious with it.....they crash remarkably well and just remember that scuffs and scratches ARE NOT DAMAGE.......they're CHARACTER :thumb2

Got an off road bike, the GS is better and less bits fall off of it. Start easy, a few byways, etc. Don't go too much too soon. Have fun, the bike is capable!

Spend as much as you can on gear for yerself - boots - armour etc then
find some "mates" who will show you very easy lanes and trails
Or go on this BMW course and see if you like it - may prove either cheap ( if you dont take to it ) or pricey if yer do :)

GS off road

Hi,
I've just been with the Adventure Riders to the Dolomites.:)
TKC80 on a week before going.

Two nights to get there, Motorways and A roads.
Off roading for two days.

Dropped the pressure in the tyres, took the mirrors and larger screen off. Dropped it a few times. Thank goodness for Crash bars:augie[/I]

Its what its made for. Give it a go.

For off road work I've got an ex army Armstrong 500 fitted with army issue trelleborgs. Fantastic off road :thumb2 scarier than my ex wife on road  (won't change direction, tries to kill you if you don't concerntrate 110% of the time, never stops and just keeps going on and on).

I'm sorry to say that my GS is going to be like 99.9% of this countries 4x4's - occasinally gets parked on grass :toungincheek........ the only difference being it hasnt got 2.4 children in the back and I can park it :augie

Go for it, and well done for being the 2% of GS owners who use them for what they're built for.

Am I a 2%er ?

I am a 2%er, and I also seem to be trying to collect the scrapes and dents the other 98% should have :blast

Ha I also have an X5 which has been well tested off road!! I am a butcher/game dealer and help game keepering! The local BMW garage hate it when it needs a service all that mud in their posh work shops.. X5 not bad off road as long as long keep it moving. Tyres are crap off road, also have Mitsubishi L200 on very aggresive trye. Much better off road.
