Perhaps this has been asked before, in which case apologies, but I've been trying to find out what the 'U' shaped thingymajig under the 1200GS seat is for, just behind where the 'toolkit' (figuratively speaking) sits - it kindof looks like it might hold a U lock of some sort, but I'm not convinced. :nenau

Can anyone shed any light on this one?

Cheers big ears

If its the bit im thinking of the diagnostics plug for the BWM computer sits in it,
begs the question though doesnt it ????

Under the rear luggage rack/pillion seat? It's a U-lock holder for a .......er....... U-lock :thumb

Doh ! Naaa it can't be , thats too obvious ....(isn't it?)

Nope, for once its the obvious that's true. What feckin use a U-lock is, mind, I have no idea. Would have been much better with a kitchen-sink holder, since it's about the only thing most peeps don't take on holiday on a GS :D

Upon purchasing said motorcycle, the salesperson pointed out a storage area for a U-Lock. That being the detent in question....

U locks in france

In France unless a bike is left with a U lock (homolugated) attached it is not insured against theft AT ANY TIME OR PLACE! If you are coming over you may not wish to have the only unlocked bike in the parking space.
However although the space under the seat is a good idea (although you still have to put the locking bar somewhere else) the seat is such a fiddle to get on and off that I have my tank bag fitted with a suitably shaped polystyrene to take the lock.

NN's used to advertise a u lock that will fit under the seat, dont look as 'ard as a padlock and chain though

No Eyes Ronnie Arrr Harrr!! (formally Shep)

Funny thing, but I was looking at that very space last night wondering what BMW sold at an inflated price that would fit in there....

Thanks Stryder, now I know

No, sorry - I should have said that French insurance companies insist on an approved U lock . Your own UK company may be more lenient - BUT nevertheless better safe than sorry.
