Right folks. I'm looking for advice. I want to take the war office to see Highclere Castle as she loves wandering around these old piles and also because Downton Abbey was shot there.
My initial plan is to fly into London stay there from Thursday to Sunday take in a show. Go to the your head gaffers house to show it and the changing of the guard😇 and then jump on a train to visit Highclere Castle.
Alternatively I was thinking of driving and catching the ferry. The problem is Highclere Castle is a 5+ hr drive. The plan would be drive down visit some spots on the way culimating in visiting the castle and staying somewhere near and leave the London bit for another time
So is there any more touristy spots on the way down we could visit to the castle and can you recommend a nice place areas to stay on the way down and around the castle
Thanks as always

If you’re coming from Bristol - Stone Henge?

Your spot on Wessie thanks for that info will have a gander
Cheers AndrewA

I'm no expert but I don't think the train station terminates anywhere near Highclere so I'd expect an expensive taxi ride from Newbury.

Good pub in Highclere, rooms and lodges too - perfect for stopping before the ferry @ Portsmouth

According to Google from Newbury is a 15 min taxi ride thanks foe the heads up

Bear Hotel also in Hungerford has a lot character, being an old coaching inn. I used to stay there many years ago with the Honda Owners Club. Lots of oak panelling. Seems to be a Greene King place so the food is probably a bit generic now, so I would dine elsewhere in the evening. Greene King breakfasts are usually pretty good and of course you will find Abbott ale to drink.
This place has parking.

Cheers lads for all the info. I'll digest it and make a decision whether to fly to London and head out to Highclere or drive over and stay in the region

Make sure you book - it’s popular and as i understand it you need a timed booking

JB What's the name of the pub Highclere please
I'm sure it's this one

Although the Canarvon Arms isn't actually in Highclere village. Then again, neither is Highclere Castle although you can access it from the village via a very long walk along footpaths & bridleways etc

The Red House is in Highclere Village but I don't think they have rooms to stay in?

A good pub/restaurant with rooms is The Jack Russell at Faccombe. It's close ish to Highclere but very rural and despite its location can get quite busy if there's a shoot on

I would suggest you come in the car as there's loads to see if SWMBO loves old buildings etc

This one at Burghclere

Literally just off the main A34 and into the pretty village

We stopped there in the way to the night ferry at Pompey, on the bikes in mid September

Had rooms and lodges

Good vibe with lots of locals using it
