Going to look at a low mileage 2006 1200gs later today ...

The seller says the abs has been decommisioned - no lights or operation on the dash.

His pictures show the ABS ring still on the front wheel.

its got 24K on the clock ...

Obviously no warranty etc....

is it worth a punt?

Definitely worth looking at it. On the 2006 and earlier GS the servo brakes are now uneconomical to repair in the case of a pump failure so a 'servoectomy' is commonly performed to return the braking system to the unassisted setup you'd have on a non-ABS bike (which you could also buy in 2006). Some people wouldn't bother to remove the ABS ring when doing this.

If it has been done properly you'll be fine. And for insurance purposes it simply doesn't have ABS.

Just make sure that it has actually been done properly.
When I bought my first GS, an 1150, I was told the same thing.
As I began to learn more about the Bike I'd bought and started digging into it myself, I discovered that the Previous Owner's Idea of a "Professional Disconnection" was to remove the Bulbs from the Dash and that was it

I have to assume that your 1150 was a non-servo ABS one, then. Because a servo 1150 without a working servo has almost no brakes. I think servo'd 1200s had a little more residual braking than the 1150 but you'd still know, I expect, if you had a failed servo rather than no servo.

Fancy braking systems were a costly extra on these machines why not try to find a bike at a good price which actually has all the things it had when new still working? I mean there must be no servo/abs machines out there at a good price? Or perhaps a later model with just abs non servo? If it was me I would be wanting the bike to be up to original spec. There must be loads of bike available they are not exactly uncommon. Of course if the price is too good to be true ... it might just be.

Mine did have a Servo.
The Servo worked just fine but he had obviously had the ABS Warning Light coming on and decided that the best way to solve the Problem was to bin the Bulbs.
I personally didn't like the Servo and its potential for unexpected failure so I did the full Servo-ectomy myself.
