Had planned to go to Malta for a few days this week, get a few beers and some diving in but fecking flight bans meant Tuesday am flight out was cancelled :tears Had a hotel booked for 70 quid for 4 nights as well

So now flights are back on every fecking place in the sun with some diving is over booked

So I thought go to Orkney and it turns out you can't find a B&B anywhere - "it's the festival dear" I was told so I searched - yup, music festival is on this weekend :blast
But I can go in the Landcruiser and kip in that, phoned the council (who run the campsite in Stromness) and she said it'll be full but just park anywhere, no one will mind :thumb2

So off to Stromness in the morning :beerjug::beer::jager

My son and I were there last week. We stayed in the Youth Hostel in Kirkwall - have you tried there. I've got a card in my jacket that I got from a couple who run a B&B at St Margaret's Hope.......{goes to find card...}

Bankburn House B&B (Where guests are not treated anonymously)
Mick Fraser - 08444 142310

Give him a try - tell him that Mike who he and his missus met in the Harray Stores tearoom last week, sent you.

Or there's Brown's Hostel in Stromness where we stayed last Friday night on the way back from Shetland...

Accommodation

One of my favorate places to go diving, you could try the diving cellar (Dougie),he has a house he rents out which may have some space or one of the live aboards (MV Invincibile) owned by Ian Trumpess also based in Stromness.

Sorry don't have contact details, away at minute but in Dive mag or google.

Good of ye Bhud tae gie Ali a headsup, imagine bumping intae yon halfwit when your on yir hols :D

Don't worry I managed to avoid them:D Nobody knew about the Folk festival in Kirkwall as apparently its mainly in Stromness so went to watch the footie (I don't think the locals like Man Utd:blast).

For anyone going over there again I stayed in the best B&B I've ever stayed in (still not tried LochBay;) ). Its right on Kirkwall Harbour and has a breakfast to die for - litterally. 4 courses with Fat bastard portions to boot... All en suite, TV lounge with Satelite TV.

(She was empty tonight by the way)

A good friend of my fathers went there in 1940

Gunther Prien

dont suppose you will believe it but it was an increadibly brave act

:bow

I love Orkney, had a girlfriend up there for a few years (was a good excuse to ride 700 miles)

She was in harray so know it well.

Its a very special place with a great community spirit

just dont call them Scottish :augie

That would explain your absence, folk festival was only Stromness but was good, some cracking music in the bars, the guys who played the pay for sessions seemed to be in the bars playing at other times so good (clearly I never went and paid to get in anywhere :augie)

Would definately go back there, good bars and nice wee town :beerjug:

the folk festival is all over Orkney, some of the concerts are on the outer islands.

I know the budapest cafe orchestra were playing on Hoy.

The start and finish concert is in Stromness.

the idea of 'folk' music might put some off but there are some really talented, original bands up there.

The harry hall concert is a right laugh, you sit at a table drinking booze then at half time, the old dears bring out sandwiches and cakes.
At the end of the concert they quickly tidy the table away then a 'dance' band come on and everyone strips the willow etc until 2-3 in the morning.

I think my mum's been to every concert since 1978 and she used to stay for a month !!!
