Goldwing…….nearly

1:00 in the linked video above illustrates how high the tour screen is even in the low position.

I am going to contact Honda, either Chiswick or Motorden in East London, to see if I can borrow one for a full weekend.

I fear you may be out of luck Richard.

I made the same mistake when i did the go look see initially.

Honda have adopted the following policy for the Gold wing, to give you the best experience possible

Initial contact, introduction, test rides , are initiated via the main Gold Wing dealerships.

If you then purchase or lease a Gold Wing, you can then have all servicing etc conducted at at the Honda dealership nearest to you.

Looking at the Gold Wing dealerships nearest to you, they appear to be

Doble Motorcycles
Coulsdon, Surrey

H.G.B Motorcycles LTD

I went to Dobles, they were very helpful

They only do 48hr test rides, as they believe it offers the best way to experience the Gold Wing

Shout out for Doble where I bought my Wing in 2020 (and have just bought a Honda Hornet CB750)…very competitive then on pricing and my RT trade in value. In both cases threw in free delivery to my doorstep (which in the case of the GW allowed me to get it ceramic coated before it had any road miles (ie dirt).

Bought mine from them as well.

We fought through the traffic to get to HGB at S.Ruislip last autumn, specifically to talk GW. They couldn't have been less interested & were instead more focussed on buggering about scrolling through social media or whatever. This is a £30k bike FFS - there must be a pretty decent margin involved. I seem to recall TMF Andy was a tad displeased when they left jobs undone on his new GW, albeit he somehow blamed himself. The whole place is somewhat tired - the rear workshop area is pretty ghastly too.

We dropped by the new HD at Watford the same afternoon - a decent enough welcome there, nice premises, just a bit too much cool dude USA stuff if I were to be critical, but I digress.

Dobles at Coulsdon seem like the go-to dealer these days. I suspect the GW specialist list needs an overhaul post pandemic.

Not true . I only tried one for an hour

Amazon .............. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wireless-CarPlay-Adapter-Convert-Support-White/dp/B0B2P9NFWW

Page down to the compatibility pdf & it shows the Honda GW (& AT).

Can I stress, I am not endorsing this product; I use it as an example that maybe could take the GW wireless.

Well I bought the akord wireless CarPlay adaptor and it worked … in 3 minute intervals. It keeps disconnecting after 3-5mins and then reconnecting.

Anybody any idea on how to resolve or it’s going back?

Yep! HGB are crap. My very first two wheeled motorised vehicle was purchased from them. A brand new 2004 (yes, that long ago) Honda Pantheon 125.
It got delivered to the house with the seat unlocked and wide open, guy pushing it down the driveway, kept on slamming it down. Which was rather alarming!!! Upon closer inspection, the complete locking/latching area looked what can only be described as been literally hammered to death.
This was a brand new £2600.00 scooter that I have saved up for to buy it outright, whilst at college and working part time at Sainsbury’s , and it was mullered in an instant with 0 miles on the clock. I should’ve asked to take it right back and have it sorted, but for some reason I did not.

Anyway, rode it right back to KGB department and after 4.5 hours it was fixes (seat base and hinge weren’t aligned properly from the factory), but still looked shit and hammered to death. So asker to have the catch and the striking plate to be replaced with brand new. Parts ordered and a week later I was back. What should’ve been a case of removing two nuts and tho screws holding the bits in place, in theory 20-30 minutes job, it took them yet another 4 hours.

Utter wankers the lot of them, and that Kevin bloke in there, along with his head mechanic are cnuts.

I now rather ride/drive 100 miles further to see another Honda dealer even though HGB lot, are only 20-25 minutes down the road for me.

That’s odd.

The dedicated Honda Goldwing webpage asks that prospective buyers of the bike who want a test ride, tap in their postcode, so that Honda can tell the punter the nearest dedicated Goldwing ‘experience’ dealership. I guess that Honda is in fact telling me the nearest dealerships to Wapping Towers, on the off chance I’d like to buy a hat?

I’ll call a couple up to see what they say. If I end up at ‘Dough balls’, so be it. It’ll be part of the ‘experience’ to travel south of the river, where monsters live.

Wonderful pictures, and I concur with your random thoughts.
Have you updated Honda's sat nav yet? My understanding is it's more than just map updates it also improves connectivity.
I felt similar with wind screens. The stock low one went up high enough for me but then the mount stays were a distraction. The top edge of the tall screen in the low position was in my line of sight. Cutting (I can't recall exactly) I believe around 2 1/2" off the tall screen made it just right for me.

Back home tonight.
Washed the Wing then refitted the OE short screen that the non Tour came with.
But before I did that I overlayed the screens to see the difference.
I reckon I need about 9 cms cutting off the top of the tall screen, so its not in my eye line when fully down but will still be much taller than the short screen.

This poor image shows the screens overlapped and the blue line is roughly where I’d get the tall screen chopped.

That appears to be about where I cut mine, almost 1/2 way between the two.

So after saying I wasn’t using my Wing, I took it out on a ride today with a group of friends, all ‘progressive riders’.

Did 250 miles of which a good proportion was muddy, gravelly and potholed twisty B roads through West and East Sussex.

The Wing was fantastic and kept up very well with the lighter bikes (eg KTM 1290, Ducati Multistrada). Used Sport setting through the fast twisties as it gives better engine braking for tight bends but boy it really hammers the body! Reverted to Tour for the most gravelly and wet bits.

What a fabulous bike! Listed to podcasts via Apple CarPlay as I rode and enjoyed the luxury….the Backmarker who was on a Pan European enjoyed his ride a lot less, said it was a bit too ‘agricultural’ for him.

Had to get home pronto at rush hour and the Wing filtered through all sorts of traffic (it is narrower than a GS of course:augie).

So a happy and successful day on a great bike.:)

What are "progressive riders"?

I was surprised (and grateful) how well the wing does on gravel roads other than it doesn't gave much ground clearance which is made worse by the long wheelbase. But it's stable.

Yup, could do with more ground clearance. Handling is so good that pegs go down quite easily.

I’d have to admit that until recently I thought sport mode was was pretty much out of place on the GW and to a degree that maybe true, it is pretty brutal. However, if a quick overtake is required tour just doesn’t work and sport comes into its own, especially fully loaded.

With so many setting requiring adjustment, sometimes quickly, the switchgear doesn’t help. Closing the throttle to switch engine modes and a long reach to manual/auto standout as difficult. On a non- tour bike half the switches are redundant anyway.

Great bike all the same, interesting, quick, comfy and a unique ride.

Lack of traction control seem ridiculous and I think the absence of tyre pressure monitoring is going to tell over the next 3wks as the rear wheel is well hidden.

Clifton:

'Making progress' is code for 'fast'....a code used in UK by various advanced rider training groups such as IaM or RoSPA (of which these guys are members or observers (aka instructors)).

Well I’ve just done 800 miles in 3 days two up and Tour worked perfectly. If you need a quick overtake then twist the throttle and it’ll kick down and just go !
And the manual/ auto button simply requires the press of a thumb ! How is that a long reach ?
And which switches are redundant ?

Buy a tour and it’s got tpm’s, and I’ll be surprised if it hasn’t got traction control.
