Good after market shocks

What are considered good choices for both the 1150 GSA and GS ? I know many most go for ohlins but there a hefty price for a pair.
So what other choices are thought to be as good or better or just a poor mans ohlins ?

Mainly for touring with camping gear and possibly two up if that makes a inference to choice.
Must be other makes to challenge ohlins without having to lash out 1.5k

Anyone have any first hand on this regrets or successful purchase on the shock front ??

Oh and are they an easy home fit or are we into dropping wheels etc ?

I had Maxtons on my 1150RT, & still have a pair on my 1150R.
Beautifully made, & they were at the time a little cheaper than Ohlins. Dealer fitted at Service, so I can't comment on the change over process.
 
ohlins (way too dear)
wilbers (good shocks with 5 year warranty) i have had 2 so far
hyperpro (similar to wilbers and very well rated)
yacugar (hear lot very very good this lately about these)
Nitron (excellent UK made shock)
WP

If was me i would go nitron as lot africa twin riders starting praise them for the price and as good if not better than ohlins

i know one rider went from ohlins to nitron and said he preferred nitron both on and off road

yacugar are building up a huge following on advrider.

+1 for a pair of Wilbers matched to your weight - they have transformed my 1150 adv with 50K when fitted

Ditto! I fitted my 1150 with a pair of HyperPro and it made an incredible difference. Go for it!

All down to budget and capital outlay/resale value - really.

If you struggle to justify the expense of Ohlins

Get Wilbers

But compare Wilbers prices with Maxton and Nitron - as the two later ones are miles better than the ones fitted as standard.

As with most things - as you go up in price, the law of diminishing returns is applicable.

For a GS - The best I would put on would be Wilbers, but I reckon Maxton or Nitron would put a grin of satisfaction on your face :thumb

Maxton are excellent on my 1200 but on a budget get ABE to rebuild the standards and also add Hyperpro springs, my 1150 was transformed and they are still excellent 3 or so years down the line ( with its new owner)
Total cost £130 for the springs and £140 ish for the refurb with a seven day turnaround.
 
I had Ohlins on my old Adventure and they pushed the ride height up compared to standard shocks. I ran with a heavier spring and they managed to bottom out two up with luggage a few times.
My latest bike has WP and i believe they're better than the Ohlins. On a recent ride, fully loaded up with Sandy and kit, the bike was far more composed and the damping was far more controlled than the Ohlins.
One other to mention, if they're still making them that is, are Fournales. Vern had some on his bike f few moons ago and they looked rather good.

Shit if the ohlins lift the bike higher that makes them a deffo no no. I'm already at my limit with the height of the bike.
Where would I find WP or maybe Wilbers then ?
Any ideas of costs fitted ? I don't mind traveling for a good job and a fair deal.
 
Hyperpro do a progressive set capt. that lower the bike 30mm once u sat on it (remains std height parked so side stand is fine)

Are they ok with fully loaded camping gear etc ? And maybe two up as well ?
Obviously I'm looking for the usual benefits of after market shocks in terms of handling and ride quality, but they have to be up to heavy loads with good longevity as well.

They do increase the height a bit on a GSA but work well

I'll admit they've risen in price - I paid £750 in 2005 for a brand new pair

I have Wilbers on my other GSA & they're ok but not as smooth as the Ohlins & definitely not as pretty :)
 
Capt have no personal experience of them but there is a thread somewhere about the hyper pro lower springs. Nothing but positives on there if i remember reading it correctly.
Considering some myself
 
Now theres also Touratech selling their 'own' shocks. Any toughts who makes them?

I have just taken delivery of a new Fournales rear shock for my 1150GS. They used to be very expensive but are now better value than Wilbers/Ohlins and if Vern's experience is anything to go by they are fit and forget and very long lasting.
