anyone got any tips for a good quality insurance approved chain lock to go on a bike that parked inside in a carpark and will be tethered to a concrete support pillar. Big chain round the pillar and a good bike lock chain to this.

I'd not worry about it being insurance approved, but more so being a good strong lock. and layering security is the best thing to do.

Look at the Bennetts Bike Social for lock reviews and tests. Some really good reading & viewing of the locks of how they perform, and their strengths and weaknesses for different attack types.

Have you measured the diameter of the concrete pillar and assessed the length youl’ll need to secure the bike, after it’s been around the pillar?

Don’t forget the best advice is not to have too much of the chain on the floor. This makes it more difficult to cut. There again the length around the pillar, will probably mimic the length that would otherwise have been on the floor.

Yeah. All the gold and diamond approved ones.

Get a Litelok X3 or Hiplock anti angle grinder lock, make it the first lock any thriving scrotes see and attack, hopefully it will wreck their grinder disc and they'll sod off.

tight fit around pillar with little slack. Front wheel against pillar and then secured to this. Garage is private parking with allocated spaces underground of apartment block access only to residents by lift. Bike will be under a cover as well. Need to convince insurers this is OK. But i did want at least some form of tethering. Probably put a disc lock on as well.

There is a load of pretty good chains and locks, all safeguarded by the pound of butter in the fridge.

Length, as much as anything else, may well dictate the one you buy.

In the end, this review is pretty much near the mark. It can be summarised as: “There is no single answer. Buy and use whatever suits you best”….double some stuff up….. and don’t skimp on the butter.

PS Have you spoken to any insurers yet? Or are you guessing what they might ask / demand of you?

Any recommendations for London?

Everyone here is different.

I’m afraid that only true and ultimately successful answer, is to start ringing around for yourself. As they say, “The Lord helps those, who help themselves”.

One tip: The questions you’ll be asked are usually fairly generic and the same, no matter the insurer / broker / chimp on the phone / online machine. Write the answered down and / or have them on a PC, so you can just reel them off and / or cut’n’paste.

Good luck with that.

My HP2 is chained to the floor with a Pragmasis chain, ground anchor, Squire lock and their pin (that goes across the frame). But I think Pragmasis was closing down?
I'd enquiry if they might let you drill for the anchor on the floor or a wall (wouldn't touch the column :) ). Long shot, but doesn't cost anything to ask.

doubt they´ll let me drill but the post thingy should work fine. They wont be shifting that in a hurry as its part of the building structure whereas a anchor can still be got at. I´ll start making some inquiries tomorrow as to what's what
Ref Pragmasis, it seems they are either out of business or have sold up. Cant find anything that available on their site.

Did you try this site Grant?

Almax. I've had mine twenty years now. It's been attacked a few times and not damaged. Not by a grinder though.

I have a Litelock grinder proof D-lock now too. It will only go through the front wheel to stop it being pushed away. But I would imagine most bike thefts are bikes being pushed away. No one is dragging a GSA into the back of a van.

You can still buy their stuff from Security for Bikes, which is actually the same outfit as Pragmasis. I collected my bits from them at the same address a while back
