Had a test ride on the Ducati Multistrada Enduro and it was good to get back on my '16 GS afterwards.
I've had 4 Ducatis so kind of knew what to expect but this Enduro is a high top heavy lump of a bike. The engine in these latest Multistradas is the best evolution of their V twins so far being somewhat less jerky at low revs than previous versions. However, when I got back on my GS I realised how much smoother/nicer the GS engine is at similar speeds in comparison. I also appreciated the GS's much lighter clutch lever action in heavy traffic, the fact that I have a back brake that works well, a neutral which is easier to snick into when stopped and that there aren't any false neutrals between the gears. Essentially the GS is more refined.

Everything you say is tru. Just changed my Multi for GS, it is far more refined in every way and the engine doesn't cut out at random, which is nice. The back brake on the Multi really annoyed me and it had more false neutrals than you could shake a stick at. It's a much better built bike even taking into account the engine corrosion problems that some are reporting on here.

I disagree, the false neutrals are down to rider error you need to be positive, the ride is much smoother and the power delivery is awesome. The back brake is only for looks if ridden correctly.

Its weight gives me no issue no more than a GSA thats for sure.

Wow.

Just wow.

Thats a lot of wrong in just two sentences.

RBW.

The GS TE LC is still the best all round motorcycle - when I get back to the UK in a few days I will have done a couple of thousand miles around France and the Swiss Alps - this has been two up with fully loaded varios and top box - even though I didn't initially buy into the dynamic suspension, it has proved to be perfect for this task - the steering is so accurate even when loaded to the gunnels. There is no other bike that is as competent - the GS compromise is spot on, unlike some of the new pretenders that sell on hype for a few months and then fade away :)

My 2c: I've been a Ducatisti for years and had my heart absolutely set on a Multi 1200S (not enduro) to do my round the world adventure.

The Enduro was way too big for me and a low chassis GS (I'm 5'7) was perfect straight out of the box - spoked wheels, easy clutch and lots of useful toys. I rode it back to back with the Multi and the S1000XR which I REALLY wanted, but for a long tour the GS is practically impossible to beat. The least engaging and fun out of the 3 for sure imo, but made me 'feel' much better if that makes any sense. I cant wait to get some miles in the saddle.

I can highly recommend offroadskills in Wales if you want to test a GS through its paces. You would be amazed what a novice who's never ridden a big ADV (i.e me) can do on one - heaps of fun!

False neutrals, got to be a gearbox issue most people that are buying these bikes have many years experience and as the OP says he tested them back to back, I've not tried one but assume the BMW gearbox is better from the above quotes.

As for the back brake, of course it's needed that's why they are fitted. If ridden correctly the back brake has many uses, like slow manoeuvres and many other reasons

If only the manufacturers had your wisdom they could save a fortune by not fitting the rear brake, or maybe make it an option, my bet is you would choose to have it fitted
