Gordo's Croatia 09 Trip Report

13th July:

Trieste to Split:

Wanted to ride by myself today. I reckoned on some
good photo opportunities and didn’t want to
feck off anyone. Eventually found a small road
which connects Slovenia to Croatia and came
across the control point. Rather fat lady came over
but was very pleasant and spoke good English.
My Slovenian isn’t up to scratch so had a bit chat
with her. She was keen to know how many there
were but I think relieved when I told her there’d
probably be only myself coming her way (does that
make sense) and that she could go back to sleep.
Round the corner the Croatian law chappies weren’t
as nice….or fat as it happens. No photo I’m afraid.

Through Rijeka. I’d been here in the early 70s on
hols with my folks. I couldn’t remember it but clearly,
from the state of the buildings, not much had changed.
Busy though,,,,lots of peeps and ‘appeared’ to be
a lively atmosphere.

A few miles on with what was going to be the norm
for the next few days. Flashing headlights. Many
speed traps. Think we all managed to dodge them
although I believe Major Gadget is still being searched
for.

Slovenian border crossing:

Even though I opted for a days ride on my jack jones, you were always going to bump into someone you knew....it's one of those roads.

Chubs and Fuddy coming through Senj:

Riding south of Senj I noted 3 tossers having
lunch so stopped for a quick chat and the
possibility of a free lunch once they’d noted
I was a weary rider……Casperfelix, TT Jim
and GSEddie……cheers fellas for nowt. Think
they were slightly behind as they went down
to check out the ferry port which runs from
Prizna to a dog leg coming off the mainland,
whilst Chubs and Mark made that ferry ride
and the road down to Zadar.

As far as a riding road down the coastline, it
was ace. The road basically follows the contour
of the coast line, with smooth, wide sweepers
and little traffic the further south I went.

Ferry boat in the distance:

Riding along quite happily, I noted 2 bikes
zooming up behind me. The first, a sports
bike came past me and then the second appeared
as the Starship Enterprise. 2 pairs of mirrors,
armchair for rider, fire extinguishers, shit hanging
from everywhere and it was only when he
passed me that I realised it was Major Gadget….
and off he went chasing down the fellow sports
bike rider.

Canny campsite in Split, although I had a little
trouble locating my own lat / long but with some
help from Stevo and Haleigh I found it. They’d
been there for a while and were set for beer and
very kindly got the beers in for the other weary
campers…..cheers guys. It was here that we got
word that part of the group had decided to stay up in
the Alps. Each to their own guys but would have enjoyed
riding with you more. Next time.

Major Gadget chasing down the sports bikes:

14th July:

Rest day in Split. Time to catch up on washing and rest.
Bloody hot…..had a walk around the marina where we stayed
but needed shade. Back to the campsite and into the beach bar.
Mark came along and decided to stay for a mini-session.
His reasoning was that he’d be hung over by 9pm and
then good for the run into Bosnia the following day.
Sounded good to me.
By coincidence a fellow Croatian tosser living next
to where we were camping (sorry mate,
cant remember your name) looked us up and offered
any help we required. Just when we needed to have a
word we saw him and his lass on the other side of the
harbour getting on their GS. A quick road block was set
up, Chubs actually, and advice sort. Cheers mate. (Chubs:
need your photo for that one)
