Gore lockout thingy!

Cheers bowser, I hear avoiding soft fabric conditioner is the thing, that will just feck them right up apparently.

I use my gear daily, in all weathers for commuting etc., I dont have to re-silicon every two weeks though? Blimey, thats pretty often!

Forgot to add, I was told that Klim amended the stuff that makes up the ZipLocks just before release, and the change has meant the silicon is now required? Anyone else got info. on that?

to be honest I think it depends on how much you use the zip, the more often the more the silicon wears off. I think that the problem with the closures is affecting all the maufactures of clothing using the system.

Re fabric conditioner, I CANT imagine why anyone would want to use softener :-) on a bike jacket, but your right I thought that the softner, and other chemicals would not do it any good, but soap flakes are fairly mild and are for woolens and childrens clothing, and as I say It does not seemed to harmed it any.

the mrs has one of them funky zips on her rukka. never had the silicone, or any issue :nenau

Did a little lateral thinking when I got home last night (and finished fighting with the jacket) ...

Furniture polish has silicone in it so I sprayed some on a cloth and wiped it onto the Lockout rails. Guess what? The whole thing now works smoother than a very smooth thing!

Just tried with profi dri lube... that seems to work as well :D

every time you buy a helmet you get a little bottle of silicone lubricant, i've never used it on the helmet visor seal so i should be ok for a bit

Well, I washed my Klim Adventure suit the other day.

Seems to have gone OK, did it as per the label instructions and avoided the nasties it says to avoid, then sprayed it with Revive-X and tumble-dry'd it for 50 minutes on the low setting. Jacket first, pants second.

Havent really gone through any major rain yet, so cant comment on the Revive-X, but, today the left pant leg Gore Lockout broke in half :(:(:(

I used it and felt it go, with the lower half dropping down my leg :blast

I cant help but think the wash/dry procedure weakened the lockout and its given up when used.

Anyway, I've contacted Adventure Spec and they want the pants back, and will be sending them back to the repair place in Austria, where they get an "up-rated" version of the lockouts.

I'll post back on here how this all turns out.

Bit s**t really 'cos I commute in the suit and we are due for wetness this coming week

Thumbs down from me over the Gore Lockouts.

Here's my broken one, weak point shown circled in red.

I now hear Klim have ditched them on the newer versions of their stuff and gone for traditional waterproof zipping.

"Nice idea, shame it didnt quite do it"...

I stand by the rest of the suit though, absolutely the best biking gear I've owned (Ziplock issue aside).

Guess I spoke too soon. My Klim pants let water in in the crotch area today during a "moderate" rainy spell.

Not fcuking happy. They're gonna have to go back.

You think it came through be material or through the zip?

When you reproofed, is it repelling water? I've come to the conclusion that Gore tex, in not treated and allowed to collect water, particularly when there isn't much of a temperature difference, it will let water in. I've experienced this in folds of the elbow of gore tex jackets.

Worth remebering that Rukka insist that their suits must be washed every six months to clear the pores of the Goretex of grime, and then be reproofed....

.....otherwise it invalidates the warranty I was told.

there's no reproofing required for rukka. their own website just advises normal washing IIRC. certainly none of that pointless nikwax bollocks.

Hello DakarDude!

Do you know whether the water came through the material or the GORE® LOCKOUT™ Closure? It would be fine, if you could check this out and then let us know about the result.

Concerning the broken closure, we advise you to get in touch with your local shop dealer. With his technical know-how, tools and spare parts he will be able to substitute it for you. If necessary, your shop dealer will send the garment to a Repair Centre, where the broken parts of the GORE® LOCKOUT™ Closure will be replaced. This service is free of charge. The restored garment will be sent back to you via UPS directly. The reshipment is free and no additional costs will be involved.

Furthermore we invite you to use our support e-mail address: gore_motorbike_support(at)wlgore.com.

Hi Peter / Mav,

The leak - I'm not yet certain which part of the pants let the water in, the water soaked my shorts at the lower end of the crotch area. I cannot say if this was the "waterproof" zip or the material itself. The pants are going back to Adventure Spec on 13th June. Being sent to a repair facility in Austria they said.

For just short of £700, there is no way these should have leaked

Thanks...

Hi Peter,

Thanks very much. I sent the trousers back on Monday and apparently they now go back to the Gore Repair Facility in Austria. The time for turn-around is 2 weeks.

What worries me more than anything is that the trousers leaked recently and that is no good to me. I am considering cleaning them using the relevant Nikwax products (mild wash and re-proofing solutions). Should this definitely cure my problems?

Thanks...

Hi dakarDude!

Could you please send us your name via private forum message? That allows us to inform the Fa. Grötzmeier in Austria about your situation and to assure that both GORE® LOCKOUT™ Closure and the leak in your trousers will be repaired.

Concerning the issue with the cleaning of your clothes, it is important that the impregnating agents you consider to use, don’t contain silicones or softeners and are water-based.

Jono old bean, I did :rtfm, I also contacted the suit supplier BEFORE I cleaned the suit, I got full instructions from them and noted them down and followed them to the letter.

The only difference in my cleaning procedure and your suggested one is I used Revive-X instead of NikWax - but Klim sell Revive-X as their suggested re-proofer. So you see, I did attempt to do it by the numbers mate. S**t, I even bought a new tumble dryer as mine was v old and didnt allow for different heat settings.

I have bought some NikWax (the two bottles, the cleaner and the re-proofer) and intend to retry the cleaning procedure with NikWax next time.

Glad you liked the TT vid :thumb

Hi Peter,

I heard a while back that NikWax were no longer recommended reproofing using their product, which goes in the washing machine, as it waterproofs the inside as well...

I've switched to simply using tech wash once every six months (nigh on daily use) with cold water rinses every now and again seems to be ok.

I see that LockOut thingy is still worth avoiding :-(

Cheers original.

Well this is exactly my point now, there is so much information and counter-information, Klim recommending Revive-X, others recommending NikWax, others saying avoid it... It leaves the end user completely fecked in terms of knowing what the right thing is to do.

I have a mate with a load of Frank Thomas gear, he absolutely swears by his gear and uses Nikwax TechWax and the reproofer. So his £100.00 FT kecks were bone dry and my £700.00 Klim kecks leaked on a recent rideout - go figure!

Gore Lockouts - so far unimpressed, PIA to keep silicone lubing the runners, and not impressed with the "zip" breakage I had. Apparently, my trousers will have the "uprated" versions put on them, so will reserve final judgement until I have tried those.
