I recently put up a thread to sell my 5 year old Stadler jacket and trousers. @ikkje was kind enough to point out that he could see signs of delamination in the pictures.

I contacted Stadler who told me to contact gore tex directly

This can be done by calling the toll-free service number 00800 2314 4000 or by using the web forms on the following pages.

They asked me to send them the jacket and trousers and a few days later told me that they confirm the delamination and would refund me the entire purhase price, which I received a day later.

The jacket and trousers have been superb. Comfortable in all weather, and completely leak proof. One memorable ride in the Jura mountains where we rode in a thunderstorm for hours (basically we seemed to be tracking the storm), I was the only one who was completely dry in the group of 5.

I've used the refund to buy a new set of Stadler gear.

So, for others who have gore tex gear, below are a few pictures of what the delamination looks like

Had a similar experience, however it was a problem with the new design zipper. Sent the jacket away and 2 weeks later was returned with a new zipper. I was the second owner of the jacket and was over 5 years old. Great service no questions or receipts required.

Where did you source the new gear from please?

Directly from Stadler. None of their European distributors ship to the UK.

I called them and discussed what I wanted, they sent me an invoice which I paid via bank tranfser to Germany. They shipped via UPS the next day.

They did not deduct the German VAT ( They should be able to as they are exporting, but it seems there was some technicality due to German rules)

I did not get charged UK VAT on delivery. However I expected to and I suspect this was an oversight by UPS. So bear this in mind in calculating the cost.

If you're visiting someplace they have a dealer in Europe, you could buy it there and claim the VAT back.

I live in London and could have gotten a cheap Eurostar day return to Brussels. There is a big Stadler dealer not far from the station in Brussels. The VAT claim back on a full suit would have more than covered the cost of the Eurostar. That plan did not work out for unrelated reasons. So I bought from Stadler directly.

Thank you your comprehensive reply, I have to say it is the most comfortable suit I have ever worn. I will reach out to a European dealer and try get the storm collar from them.

This has me very confused. If I claimed VAT back in the UK for my German (or Belgian) purchase, wouldn't the UK customs want their slice of pie with Vat and maybe import duty?

I worked as a fabric supplier to WL Gore for many years. I was always impressed how professional the Livingston site team were. Very tough when negotiating new business and hard on any failings but an amazing business to work with.

You claim the VAT back in Germany, or the last EU country you're in, when you depart the EU. Not in the UK

When you arrive with the goods into the UK, you are supposed to declare anything that is above the allowance and pay the UK VAT. There is usually no additional duty on goods manufactured in the EU.

I have yet to meet anyone, or hear of anyone, who has actually done this for a few personal goods brought over the border in person.

If something is shipped from the EU, the seller should be able to remove the EU country VAT and ship it to you. Then, if the total invoice is more than £135, UK customs will charge VAT and Duty (if goods manufactured outside the EU). What really gets me irritated is that VAT is charged on the Duty amount as well. A tax on a tax!

same happens if you buy something from John Lewis if they paid import duty just that you do not see it itemised on the receipt.

same happens with fuel duty paid by the wholesaler

why should a personal import be different?
