Got a whine on over run in 4th 5th 6th it starts in 4th get louder 5th and louder in 6th.just done a oil change on box and final drive but still there, any ideas.am i looking at a bearings in the box.seems to have just started a week ago.

I've a feeling this could be the year of the 1150 "box".

In the last month i've done two gearboxes needing all new bearings, and another popped by yesterday to have confirmation of the same.

Must be a lot of bikes coming up to "that" mileage and age. :augie

One had the whine/rumble, but the gearbox oil was golden like fresh oil.
Within 100 miles the oil looked like liquid metal, a bearing had collapsed and took the main gearbox case with it.

What mileage and what age? Fancy causing terror like that in the 1150GS community Neil.:toungincheek:

from 2000 - 2003.

52K miles up to 78K miles.

Works out an expensive job as you may as well fit a new clutch at that mileage while the gearbox is out.

Thank you for that reassurance on mileage. At my rate of logging up miles I have another 6 years left before hitting 52K, by which time I may not reach the floor if old age has its way!!:beerjug:

Hmm...mines a 2002 with 49k. I'll keep me ears open. I'm due to do a gearbox oil change soon too.

Is it time to compile a list of symptoms which relate to common problems?

Regards

Any on 2004/2005 bikes or was the gearbox modded by BMW on the later/last bikes??

Don't worry about it.
There are more bikes that have covered more than 60K miles without any gearbox problems than there are that have suffered problems.

S'funny that everyone has been avoiding M94 R11 gearboxes due to bearing issues:augie

Not the same issues but issues all the same:augie:augie

My 52 plate 1150 with 76k and has been whining :augie in 4, 5, and 6 th gears for the last 2 years:blagblah.......was worried until I found some ear plugs which tend quieten things down nicely. :D:D:D:D
Joking aside, I won;t worry until something goes bang:clap

Hmm, it'd be the bang that turns a not too expensive job (replacing gearbox bearings) into a very expensive job (replacing gears, bearings and gearbox casing) that'd worry me (see Steptoe's earlier post in this thread)...

Kerrrrrrrrrrisssst.....er yes Mat thanks, better get rid of that fluffly cloud feeling I have about the beast then.:blast
I know its got to be done thanks. (anyone give us an idea on prices)
Thanks...........Flatty
