The missus has kindly agreed to qet me a new GPSR for Christmas :) so any help with the choice would be greatly apreciated:thumb
The main purpose of the unit would be logging and plotting routes for trail biking and also mountain biking with a bit of walking thrown in.
I would like to use mapping software (memory map???) to get as much right of way and topographical detail as possible.
The units I have in mind are the GPS60csx and the Edge. I'm aware these are rather different units but I have used neither, just looked at specs.
The edge info doesn't give much clue as to how much map data can be uploaded but i know it's quite small as a friend has one. I've not seen a 60 so am not sure of the size.
Anyone got or used either of these in similar situations and would you care to impart some wisdom:D
TIA

The Edge cannot load mapping data

Note that the Edge series units are not traditional navigation devices.
They are training aids. They will give you alarms for speed too low/high, cadence too low/high, heartrate too low/high and also give you a virtual partner to ride against.
If you want traditional navigation displays then you do not want an Edge

ive got a gpsmap 60c ive had it for 18months now and its been brilliant ,so the newer improved 60cx or 60csx should be ideal for your needs

will be getting myself a 60cx for christmas :thumb

Cheers guys, looks like it's gonna be the 60 then. Am i right in thinking that i can get a 1gb micro sd card for it then drop large chunks of memory map onto it for detailed mapping when out and about? Also are there compact mounting systems for them? The foretrex and etrex have minimalist handlebar mounts which mean the units not stuck out away from the bike and therefore less likely to be snapped off in a stack. I had my 2610 on a ram mount on the GS but fear a similar set up would not be very practical on a peddley bike:nenau

Yes you can get a 1gb card and load mapping onto the unit. It would have to be garmin mapping and not memory map. You can only transfer routes and waypoints with memory map.
Also you can get ram mounts for the 60 range.

Hope this helps.:thumb

Cheers Mollers:thumb So is it possible to have topo on the GPSR and still use memory map to plot routes then drop them onto the unit? I believe topo doesn't have much right of way data?

60cx top device! It’s able to down load its saved track log to the data card (so you don’t loose it with overwrite) and its got the Sirf III processor for satellite acquisition and tracking. (Very sensitive and great for use under tree cover and in the urban jungle)

I’m very tempted myself!
