If a straight USB lead is used to power a garmin GPS from a cigarette socket or 12v supply the unit usually goes straight into file transfer mode.

Mine did when I used a cheap power supply from eBay.

So I searched for a solution and found this.

I made up a lead as per this video and it works just fine.

If you don’t want to watch the lengthy spiel then just open up the USB cable and cut the green and while wires.
Solder them together on the mini / micro side of the lead and just insulate the other cut ends.
Then protect the joint and repair the cable outer with heat shrink and it works a treat, no more “file transfer mode”

Here’s link to the video
And another to the 5v power supply I bought.

Good luck.

Bought an adapter off eBay for a couple of quid .

I’ve tried looking on my order history but can’t see it ,will keep looking and post link if I find it.

Yes it works fine ,as you say I think it’s just a plug that only has the pins that connect the power to the unit .saves having to determine which pins to cut yourself and for the cost why bother with the DIY .
