Hi Guys,

I have a GPS and taking the power from the Socket on the bike. I would like to wire it straight to the battery. The wires are quite thin wouldit be safe to to this or is it better in the socket?

Hi Alex,

I just snapped the socket off of my Garmin lead (caught my boot on it) I have just cut the broken plug off and crimped some eye terminals and an in-line fuse and wired straight to the battery. Done the same to my airhead about 2years ago - never had any problems (bike now will go up in a cloud of smoke !!) I am sure someone here can tell you how to wire it up correctly so the cable is only live when the ignition is switched on.

Cheers

Duncan

Thanks, I will wait and see if anyone replies to this with an idea of how to wire it up to the ignition.

Horn might be best as a switched ignition power source. Only a guess though as the canbus might still throw a wobbly. Might be worth searching for how people power their intercoms and if there's any better / more certain suggestions.

Power supply

Wire it direct from the battery via a small relay the coil of which should be connected to the rear light circuit. This is as it's conveniant but YOU MUST put an in line fuse in the circuit as near to the battery as possible. The current drain of a relay coil is so small that it should not affect the magical?
wiring system of the gs. This set up will of course give you a power supply for the GPs which is controlled via the ignition switch.
dave ( istill got a map) gs.

This sounds very good but how do I know which is the rear light circuit. I'm afraid that me and electrical things do not get on, fear of the unknown I guess. Has anyone done this so that they could walk me through this?

I've just put a Zumo 550 on a 12GSA - Didnt want to go off the battery or the rear Aux outlet, or cut into any wires.
Got a 2820 cable (BMW Part No 71 60 7 686 670)from Southport superbikes and cut the connector off that fits the Aux outlet by the headstock, bit of soldering & heat shrink tubing attaching it to the Zumo cable almost looks professional:kissy2

My 1200 is an 06 model and the GPS is a streetpilot III deluxe old I know but I like it.
