Just a quickie, i take it the 2610 speedo is a little nearer my actual speed than is displayed on the 1150 gs Adv speedo?
If so then my shows that at an indicated 30, 40, 50,mph etc on the bike i am actually 5mph less???

GPS is accurate BMW speedo indicates higher speed that GPS which means you service it before it's necessary

Yeah, the same with mine. 5mph less. I would have thought it would be a percentage ... 10% say, but it's about 5mph from 20 to 100 ...

I'm with Gecko - my GS speedo definitely reads faster than GPS. At least 5mph at my usual speeds but I can't say I have studied it in depth.

In the car, same GPS unit, the same is true but they are closer (around 3mph at 80mph).

No doubt that the GPS is correct. Even at +/- 40ft accuracy (it varies depending on number of sats in view) the GPS is accurate to better than +/- 1mph up to 130mph.

I fid that my gps speed is typically 5-6 mph out as well, speedo reads 50mph gps reads 55mph. I think its all a bloody conspiracy, but when the boys in blue pull you up what happens then?

Have you got that the right way round. The speedo shouldn't show lower than the actual speed.

Kinda interesting to compare the different speedo accuracies:

Garmin Quest says 80mph....

'73 Scimitar says 71mph (whoops!!)
'99 Renaut Espace (digital speedo) says 83mph
'02 1150GS says 84mph
'97 TVR Chimaera says 88mph (tut tut!)

You can expect a 32 year old car to be a "bit out" but there seems a bit too much variance across the board in the more modern stuff!

I think you've go that the wrong way round John. The GS is well known to have a speedo which reads 10% or so fast (ie it'll say you're doing 60 when you're actually doing 54ish). Unless someone has fitted a seriously weird speedo drive to your bike, it should read similarly...

Easily fixed!!

Hi all!

Get on the blower to your dealers and asked them to order you an 1150 R speedo drive.

It is exactly the same as the GS one to look at and fit but the internals are differently geared. The GS one has 3.0 stamped on the outer and the R one has 2.8 stamped on it - the gear ratios.

I did this a 34,000 miles ago on mine which means my bike has done 34,000 indicated miles as apposed to 34,000 + 3,4000 (thats a lot less in servicing costs)

I believe that if your bike is new enough and still under warranty then the dealer can do it as a claim

Why on earth they don't do this at the factory God only knows!!!

Already done - still reads a little high, but much better.

I believe JimB got his fitted under warranty, if you need a precedent to quote to your dealer - but it's not an expensive or difficult job anyway...

Youre right, I'm wrong it is the other way round, AND I read it twice. DOH!

You might want to clarify one thing;
your speedo and your odo will (definitely) have different errors.

Generally speedos read 5-10 % higher than actual and odos read 0-3 % high or low

You would almost think they deliberately manufactured them this way !

Prestige car speedos generally read within 2 % of true

My BMW speedo was always well fast compared to the GPSR. My 2000 Xantia reads 5mph faster than the GPSR. Difference could be down to different tyre profiles however.

No - it's your new fangled electronic speedo - not a mechanical one like my '94 Classic Xantia...

At 30mph in my Nissa, the 2610 says.. 25mph..

At 30mph on the bike.. my mates Fazer 600 says i am doing 25mph.. ( they have a digital speedo)..

I have just fitted a migsel mount and wired in the GPS in prep to a trip to scotland.. so will test it this weekend coming.

tested my speedo against gps today,
gs @ 90mph gps indicates 82mph,
gs @ 80mph gps indicates 72mph,
gs @ 60mph gps indicates 53mph
8 mph out!
even at 50mph on the gs the gps says 44mph,
no wonder cars where shooting past me in 40 and 50 zones.
think i might buy a wireless cycle computer for when i dont have the gps on.

have now found more info on the speedo error and will order

its 2.875:1 ratio as opposed to the gsa 3.0:1 ratio

Speedo on the 1200GS seems to always read about 2 mph high. Acceptable I think.

I compared the speedo readings on my Triumph with my GPS the other day. This is what I came up with:-

GPS Speedo

30mph 36mph
40mph 47mph
50mph 58mph
60mph 69mph

An overread of between 15 and 20%. My GS (fitted with the 2.875 - 1 speedo drive) is much better. With the GPS showing 115mph, the speedo was showing 118.
