GPX - A Draft Plan - and trip report - Northern Vosges, Southern Vosges and Black Forest

I’m on the 1116. Well, obviously I’m not as no trains are running through the tunnel.

I can tell I’m getting near the UK again because everything has turned to fucking shit. Tunnel wankers.

Arrived home. Tour over. 1910 miles. 4 countries. Huge fun. My bike took some cleaning mind.

I’ve taken my porridge spurtle off my bike and placed it in its home until the next one.

The End.

A footnote to my recent trip to give some recommendations to anyone in these areas, along with some places to avoid.

Chimay: One of my regular lunch stops and have tried the Casino Brasserie a couple of times. However it was closed so I rod down to the main square in the old part of town and had a really nice lunch at La Blanche Du Quistot.
Sedan: the hotel is lovely in the chateau and I enjoyed my stay there and bike parking is secure. However, I thought the town was a bit rough. That said, I did have an excellent dinner at the restaurant Saint-Michel in the hotel of the same name. I would consider Sedan as a stopover again but prefer Bouillon.
Haguenau: Logis hotels are usually excellent and this one, Hotel Les Pins, was okay but it is pretty tired. The parrot and giant Great Dane in the lobby make it interesting! I would not stay there again as even though the hotel has a car park, your bike is visible from the road. Superb restaurant in the town called Restaurant Le Jacques. Highly recommended.
Colmar: I stayed in the Colmar Hotel for 4 nights. Absolutely brilliant with great rooms, secure parking, a great breakfast and lovely staff. A really nice hotel and an excellent base for the Vosges and Black Forest. In Colmar itself, the Schwendi Wiestub was the best restaurant I found. And for Tarte Flambee, Restaurant Le Soi is the best by miles.
Black Forest: I love the Hexenlochmuhle. Best meal I had on the whole trip. A kebab of beef and pork fillet.
Epernay: The Theatre Restaurant. Very good daily lunch. 3 courses for E30.
Saint-Quentin: Le Florence is a good hotel. Rooms have aircon and bike parking its completely secure.

Hope this helps fellow travellers on two wheels.

Re Hotel St Jean in Sedan - we stayed there and it was very good. Recently updated but, yes, the surrounding streets are a bit run down. The hotel has secure parking in a courtyard behind the roller door for bikes. Yes, the town is quiet on weekdays. The excellent Bar Gambetta closed at 7pm so we went back for a good dinner at the hotel.

Hotel les Pins. Been a while since I stayed there. The restaurant was excellent and @Gyp and I were able to park our bikes in one of the garages under some of the rooms. Was this not an option for you? A better bet near Haguenau (which is usually clogged with traffic) is to cross the Rhine on the free ferry at Drusenheim and stay in Buhlertal at Hotel Adler https://maps.app.goo.gl/dfooQ9WeuEMts7eb6

Hotel Florence is a good place to head for on a first or last night in France. Used it a couple of times.

Ah yes, Hotel les Pins.

If my fading memory serves me well, that was the place where I was up all night sending messages to solicitors dealing with my late uncle's will, and the owner got quite shirty with my when I took Horse a cup of tea to the room as that was strictly forbidden.

But the restaurant was good and the bikes were parked inside :-)

I did see those garages but didn’t ask if I could use one.
