After reading Wapping's post on his jaunt through the tunnel to Calais I thought I'd add a new one. Its a day trip from Calais into the interior and is easily done in a weekend from Calais - even leaving early in the morning from the UK side. I haven't used the hotel yet but its our last stop on the return leg of our 9 day ''Tour de France'' planned for September. Will post details after we've done it so I can give better feedback on the accommodation etc. Again we always use the Logis Hotel website and follow their colour guide especially for the restaurant part. Blue colour indicates a bit more upmarket grub but you can have a look at the gradings yourself. The hotel / restaurant is in the village of Bremicourt. https://lacourderemi.com/

So a short trip out (just over 100km) and back its a bit longer at 120km.

Thank you, Grant.

The initiative to share GPX routes, especially via MyRoute’s ability to embed routes into the forum, is working really well.

I am pretty familiar with the region and know that it’s possible to have good days in the (supposedly) “It’s all dull” area of France. With it being so close to Calais, it’s a shame perhaps that people don’t make more use of it, even for just a couple of days away. Though, I can see that idea does suit people living in the immediate south east corner of England, way better than someone in Wales, Cornwall or Ireland.

Similarly, instead of blatting to Cambrai on the motorway, people could have a look at the cross-county alternatives, helped if you cross over the evening before and stay in, say, St Omer.

The latest edition (3/2023) of Alpentourer, is dedicated to ideas of jaunts in France. By a strange coincidence, one of their suggestions is a sort of hybrid between the route I took:

and Grant’s jaunt.

I have taken the liberty of taking screenshots the article. It’s all in foreign but the pictures are OK and, with a bit of imagination, it’s near enough possible to get the gist of the message.

Download the jaunt and other suggestions from the magazine, here:

The files download easily and display well. That being said, I did spot some small glitches (easily corrected) and sometimes little excursions off, for reasons that are not too clear. I guess they are either little errors or they go see some feature or other, which is explained in the text, which I can’t read. The golden rule applies….. always check and if necessary correct any route from a third party BEFORE you sail off out of the door.

Instant holidays.
