After hearing good things from Pastyman and Bakerlongerlegs I've Just had my Mono GS heads done by Steve Scriminger. Really nice guy and a quick turnaround. I dropped them off on Monday and got an Email today saying they are ready

He's in Sleaford. Does engineering and servicing on airheads and oilheads. Highly recommended.

I've heard these people are good, are the expensive ?

Bomber

This was for my Mono G/s cylinder heads

Std Valve guides x 3 £24.00
O/S Guide x 1 £13.21
Exhaust Valves x 2 £55.00
Inlet Valves x 2 £30.00
Valve Springs x 4 £12.60
Labour to fit Guides £50.00

Return Carriage £10.00

Nett Total £194.81
VAT @ 17.5% £34.09

TOTAL £228.90

Pretty much what I expected and on par with SEP. The difference is SEP took 7 weeks to do the work on my R100 heads. Steve Scriminger took 2 days :)

The labour to fit the guides included machining the head to take the OS guide and grinding the valves.

I agree, top bloke. He machined a squish band into my heads for a 1000cc conversion using the standard 1000cc pistons, and fitted hardened valve seats. Can't remember the price, but i am tight, and i was happy.

hardened valve seats

Should i have these hardened seats put into my 90s gents.??
MOT done so just a bit of a clean up needed then i will post a pic or two.

If I remember right he rode a R100 RS with fancy heads was it 4 valve heads.

One of these !!
I've only got the model one, but bloke in Tavistock has a genuine one :spitfire

It's the exhaust seats that suffer from regression. I wouldn't bother unless you keep loosing the valve clearances.

Rob is right, mine were alright for thousands of miles doing short journeys in the uk, but when i took it to Garmisch and the Alps for a 5000 mile trip, it suffered on fast motorway rides. On the blast back through switzerland and france to catch the ferry i had to adjust them 3 times, when i got back i stripped the heads and the exhaust valve seats had sunk into the head and the valves were knackered. So i think it depends what sort of riding you are going to be doing, if you've got a lot of long fast trips planned, i would do them.
cheers kompost

That's interesting.

Revell appear to have based the kit on the standard motor.

Is that a central plug on the genuine article ?

Do you have any pictures of the four valve head rocker assembly ?

Bob.

some did have 2 valve motors in Mikes frame

Thanks Rob, just need to get Tax and Insurance now and i can have a play.
It does have a funny sound from Eeeeeerrr! the air box ( i think ) sounds like a dry oillite bust or some thing, high pitched and a bit knocky then goes:(
I did'nt notice it when i took it for MOT only when i got home....

It could be the engine breather. My 78 R100 was misting at the seams and occasionally making a chuffing noise. I've just fitted the later breather valve - no more noises or misting. Well worth the £10 for the breather.

My R90s still has the original crankcase breather, when warm it chirps like a Canary:augie
I've got the new metal reed type in stock but will never fit it.
as without that chirping, someone would have bought her, before I could raise the cash in 1979/80..
Told the test riders that it wouldn't be under warranty :augie and it could be buggered bores etc:blast causing pressure bypass. :blast and wouldn't they like to buy the very nice, newer, shinier, and much more streamlined R100 rs that we have just over there sir and I'll do you an amazing deal :aidan

OOOOO I'm blushing here, thinking of those long told fibs of mine :o !!!!:rob

In 1980, I manged to scrape up the £900 to buy her:angel

she will NEVER be sold as long as I'm on this planet :rob

Very interesting.

How does the four valve head change the engine characteristics ?

I presume more power - but is it higher up the rev range ?

What about torque ?

Are the heads and pistons still made ?

Ta.

Bob.

More Torque, More revs [8k redline] power from 3k all the way up to 7750rpm

IIRC it was around 85 bhp against 70 bhp for 2 valve head
I think someone in the German BMW club bought Mikes machines and jigs when he retired.....
I'd love to find another kit...
Only downside is they rattle like a bastard and you're always thinking you hear them breaking :rob

Mike Krauser made his dosh doing the original accessories for the airheads, then sponsored BMW racers, the 4 valve head was made originally for that reason

MMMMM wonder if Touratwat would fund something like that nowadays:augie:augie
