At the grand old age of 64 I've developed a hankering to try a little light green laning.

I'm looking for an "entry level" trail bike and was thinking maybe DR350 or 400, XR250 or 400 or CRF250L / CRF300L. Budget around £3k max.

I'm tall [6'3"] and heavy [@110kg] so maybe that might rule out a Serow?

Does anyone have anything that might fit the bill? I'm in North East but will travel for the right bike.

Those Hero trail bikes from India have been getting some decent reviews, and are under £3k. I suppose they are the Indian equivalent to the old Yamaha XT225 Serrow

Original wheels are included, which as you would expect, are in excellent condition.

The Rally raid rims have corrosion, and have been refinished in a gold paint of some description, but sound otherwise.

I changed the oil and filter, and replaced an oil gallery drain bolt crush washer. Runs well. Sound lovely...

Get a DRZ 400 if you can afford one, clearly it will have to be an original. The CRF 250/300 do not pull the skin off a rice pud and need their suspenders sorting for a man of your stature. Most important along with the bike, body armour and I always wore a neck brace as well. The DRZ if looked after well is pretty much bullet proof and is fun on the road between lanes as well as on. I have had loads of green lane bikes 450 KTM;s Husky's, CRF's Beta 300 and the best was the oldest the DRZ.

TRF bloke I knew reckoned a DRZ400 was probably too much for a newbie. I did a day down in Hampshire many years ago., I think we were on SWM 200s or 225s. On road, felt like it wouldn't do the proverbial with a rice pudding, but off road it was an entirely different matter.

I started with a DR 350 ,,,,, very good and reliable thing it was too , not at all bad on the back roads , and perfectly capable on the trails for a learner .
Then I had a DRZ 400 , also a capable thing , not intimidating on the trails either .
I had a Maico 2 stroke - motocrosser a while ago ,,, Jeeze it was a scary beast of a thing ,,, sold it before it killed me

A mate of mine had a Maico crosser back in 1979/1980,it was either a 400 or 500 2stroke and for a 17yr old kid(me at the time )it was virtually impossible to ride it,what an animal of a bike!

If I remember rightly this “ Thing “ was a 500 single ,, is started and bogged n wheezed till it hit the POWER BAND ,, Then it was like something out of a star trek scene when they hit the hyper warp drive and it all blurs ,,, it must have been built for “ Riding Gods “ I sensibly sold it away ,,, before it killed me

If you’re seriously considering a CRF250/300L then do not ignore the GS310. Better engine, proper suspension and electrical.
Bear in mind that any of the ones you’ve listed are 50% heavier than a proper enduro and the same weight as a 690 Enduro R but with 59-70% less power as well. Considering your build that is not something you want to ignore.

On paper a the Himalayan 411 would not be classed no lightweight but it feels a lot lighter than it is, is very user friendly , cheap to buy and run and have a very relaxed way of riding. They are big enough not to be cramped for taller peeps and low enough for you to gain confidence and the main thing they are great fun to ride
