Wonder if anybody has had the same problem. I set the ESA the other day into pillion mode and got a grinding vibration which orginally felt like it came from the rear brake but actually came from the the shaft. Took into BMW and they told me this is perfectky normal. Has anyone else had similar experiences..

Sorry I'm new into forums, not sure exactly what girl/boy is about? Did you have an answer?

Hi, barclays,
Welcome. I have felt a bit of over run vibes but deffo not grinding noise.
There is an orchestra of noises and vibes from the WC but after a couple of thousand miles i don't notice them anymore, just part of the character of the bike.
I too am a bit mystified by the first 2 responses, not a lot of help there.
You may have broken some kind of 'online forum' taboo.

Why would the vibes come from the shaft, if it's the ESA you adjusted?

This is possible as the angle of the drive shaft will change with bike height. I assumed the noise was heard whilst riding. So the relevance is possible. If you have owned a car with CV joints, or universal joints you will understand how the change in drive angle effects things.

it would change the angle

Why would the vibes come from the shaft, if it's the ESA you adjusted?

if he adjusted the ESA it would raise the suspension changing the angle of the shaft possibly causing it to contact the housing or changing the stress / load on the shaft?
im no mechanic its just my thought on it.

Thanks for the replies. I originally thought that because I had changed the ESA setting onto Pillion and had ridden the bike without a pillion that because there was not the additional weight that the preload would expect, this was the reason I was getting the grinding noise. Seemed strange and as I said took into BMW and they test rode it and said this was normal. The reason why I am asking for advice is that I don't have too much faith in my dealer as they seemed to want to fob me off. The engineer said it could definitely feel it but then said it was normal, how could grinding be normal?

how could grinding be normal?

I'd recommend test riding another GSLC, e.g. your dealers Demo bike, and see if that's the same. if it is, then its maybe a normal characteristic.

But if the other bike doesn't do it, then yours may well be faulty.

Good luck...:thumby:

I think this is the only way you're going to satisfy yourself and make a direct comparison, interpretation of the "character" of the bike does include rumbles and various noises that initially seem not right. I've had a GSA for 2 years and a GS 2 years before that both with ESA, yours in the LC is supposedly smoother, but I've never had any additional issues after ESA adjustment.

hope you get it sorted.

No not sorted as yet as I've been away however I will be going in over the weekend or early next week to do a test ride on another bike to compare so will update. Thanks for the replies

Mine still at the dealer with similar , plus gearbox , plus front end shake .............love it but beginning after 4 weeks to hate it now ... pity as before it was ace

I know the the niggles I'm having with the bike is starting to take the shine off it. Popped into Vines of Guilford on Saturday and while I was unable to get a bike to compare said there should be no reason for any grinding from the shaft. I think my issue is that I have been dealing with BMW Park Lane who are owned by BMW UK and don't seem willing to do anything.

I wonder if this is the same noise I'm experiencing. I made a post about it today. I'm not sure where its coming from but if you keep the clutch held in you can hear it for a prolongued period ...its a slipping/grinding noise. I'd say more slipping than grinding though. It does it on several different scenarios

Okay so I went out on my bike today to try and record the noise to present to bmw. I took my daughter along and noticed i hadn't changed the ESA from pillion. With my daughter on today the bike was perfect. No noises crunches etc

I wonder if me leaving this in pillion mode when there was just me had caused it. I was out for an hour today and tried everything to get the noise to reoccurr but I couldn't. I hope it is something as simple as that

Im taking it in today to have a look at it. It sounds like it could be the same issue. When you hold the clutch in you feel it most

The centre stand has a rubber bump stop that seems to touch the swinging arm when on the side stand.
When you get on the bike there would be clearance between the two. If you set the rear preload to pillion and only one person is on the bike this clearance would get less maybe if it touches this could cause the sensation. When your daughter got on the bike the clearance would come back.
Only a suggestion.

That's when mine occurred. I went to Scotland thinking I had sorted it and it came back. It made the bike almost unrideable

I then had a Homer Simpson moment after reading the manual. When I had been changing from pillion to solo etc I had pressed the button, waited a couple of seconds and rode off. I didn't wait for the helmets to stop flashing and once I rode off it must have stopped adjusting and left the preload in the wrong position. The bike doesn't change the preload again until you adjust it....again if you don't wait for it to stop flashing you'll be in the same situation again...or that's what it was like for me.

The difference in the bike is unbelievable. From being the perfect bike it went to being awful....crunches, slipping, grinding, vibrating. I honestly wouldn't have kept the bike if I had to live with that. I've road the bike loads since and it's perfect

I feel like a pleb for doing it but thought I'd post in case it helps others

@SMB cheers for the info mate :)
