Grip replacement - heated grips.

One of my gloves decided it was hungry last time out and ate a chunk out of my throttle grip. It's gone down to, but not through, the heating element.

Am I right in thinking that the elements are separate to the rubber grip so the grip can just be replaced as per a normal grip?

If so, anyone know how much the grips are from BMW?

Elements are inside the grips and come as a complete unit, about £45 from dealer last year if I remember correctly.

Easy enough job to change them.

Yeah I just phoned Barrie Robson and apparently the LH grip is forty something and the RH is 60 something. Shitty letter going in RUKKA's direction shortly.

Hi Adam, I remember me ol mate Motorhead RIP told me he had successfully changed the grips but used the original heating elements. IIRC he used a model knife very carefully to remove the outer grip and then I think he said hairspray to refit new generic grips. Maybe a search on here will reveal all ?

go on adv rider and look for a post my mikeO he shows it all. i did mine last month keeping the heater element in place and two new grips from motorworks came to about 13 quid buy two throttle grips.this was on my 1150 gsa.would have thought the same for a 1200? here you go http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90799&highlight=mikeo

That's what I am thinking/hoping. Just wondered if anyone knew for sure before I hack off the old grips.

The elements are part of the grip on the 1200's. I damaged my throttle grip being too heavy handed with a rocker, had to buy the whole thing.
The other option I suppose is to fit aftermarket grip heaters (as I have done on my 640), then you can put what grips you want over the top. If I damage mine again, that's what I intend to do.

Motorworks have a ton of them in I had to replace my throttle one and it was half price.

First one I got from them was knackered though so ask them to multimeter the connection beforehand.

PS) On the 1200 it's part of the throttle assembly (glued) you can not just take the wire off.

PS2) The part design changed three times so make sure you get the right part number as not backwards compatible

Or fit 'Grip Puppies' over the damaged grips. My mate did this on his Pan European. Works fine and the heater aspect seems unchanged.

I was going to suggest that too I find the grips more comfy too with them being a bigger circumference and the heaters work well enough.

Adam, the stock heated grips are fitted by undoing the handlebar control wiring housings from their rear with a small Torx screwdriver then unclipping a small molex type connector. The static LH grip is held onto the handlbar by torx screws and the RH throttle grip is on a plastic rotary tube which requires the throttle cable housing to be split at the handlebar end. A piece of piss takes about 20 mins max, had to fit my own heated grips in 2005 as my 2004 model bike didn't have any as standard.

Now fitted grip puppies due to my gloves wearing through the paper thin rubber grips.

Yeah i know mate, but that wasn't the Q.

I want to know if I can split the rubber grip (which is holed) from the heater elements (which are fine) and replace just the rubber grip...

You can grind/sand rubber.

I was thinking/implying that they can be removed and worked on eg carefully grind off the excess rubber on a bench grinder, glue new grips over the top.

Safer than trying to cut off with a scalpel and gives a regular and keyed surface finish.

TBH I think I'd have far less chance of damaging the elements with a scalpel than I would a grinder.

Yes, hence I prefer the surgical precision of a scalpel, not the rough engineering of a grinder.

My disfunctional wrist means i can only twist the throttle grip betwen fingers and thumb and have worn two out under warranty, so my cheap option was to take off hand guard and stretch a short length of racing bicycle inner tube to cover the hole, works fine, heat still gets thru and doesn't look obvious.
