Hi folks.

My local BM dealer is meant to be carrying out a 24,000 mile service as part of the sale of a GS 1100 I'm buying. He also said somethng about an annual service as the bike has not received a service for just over a year. Should this then be a 24,000 mile and annual service?

This service looks to be a big one and if done correctly it looks like just about everything needs checking or replacing, and I’m never confident that dealers will spend money when they don’t need to. What should I look out for in order to make sure this has been carried out correctly? Should the air filter and fuel filters get changed? Am I also correct in thinking the poly v belt needs to be changed? Should I ask for some sort of service check list of what has been done or is the dealers stamp enough.

Sorry for all the questions but a search for 24,000 service didnt turn up everything I would like to know.

Poly V belt isn't scheduled for replacement at 24k (it's a 36k item), but I'd be tempted to get it replaced anyway. After a few examples going before or just after 36k, I now consider it a 24k item. Not expensive.

Thanks Mike, any idea of the cost as the dealer will want paid if this is not a scheduled job :)

Oh and if it snaps what happens?

Oh and if it snaps what happens?

First it gets brighter, as the generator warning lamp comes on. Then, eventually, it gets darker, as your battery runs flat. At midnight. In France. In the fog. In November.

Not all of the above may happen to you, of course.

Not sure what a dealer would charge - but in your position I'd see if I could get the labour, at least, thrown in as part of the deal...

Cheers all. Thanks for the file Gecko :)

I'll see if I can get this done while it's getting serviced.
