I just bought a new GS 1200 (2013) which has the sat nave cradle fitted already by BMW. It also has sat nav control wheel fitted to the left handle grip on the handle bar. Obviously to fit the BMW Navigator on to but does anyone know if the Garmin Zummo 660 will operate just the same and work using the control wheel fitted on grip? There is a £200 difference in price!! Appreciate any help:flag.

If paying the extra for the BMW unit to enable control some of the functions by the wheel then go for it.

Otherwise get the Zumo 660 which works perfectly well by gloved touch operation.

You can get cheap lifetime map updates on the Zumo. I know the BMW unit is more locked down and I don't know if the map updates are the same.

Free lifetime updates on the BMW unit:rob:beerjug:

Islayboy,
Depends on what GPS you are used to, if any. I bought a new Tom Tom Rider(2013) for my new GS, fitted and using. Cost £350 with free lifetime map upgrade.
Oh and does'nt cover the top of the rev counter;)

Thanks a lot folks, useful comments. I decided to pay the extra and get the Navigator.

Good move. I would have gone for a TomTom, but the fact that the BMW nav utilises the wheel, and the lock uses the ignition key, it was a no brainer for me.:thumb

I have a Touratech lockable nav mount on my other bike, and I reckon a three year old could bend it back and steal the sat nav.:blast

Fitted it today and enjoyed a trip from Dundee o Islay in the rain, sat nav worked well. Thanks for your help:flag

Hi Islayboy. I'm in the same predicament as you, bought my bike from Dundee. Did you manage to get a discount on the nav as £200 to turn a wheel seems expensive :flag
