What would you do if you found out that your GS was damaged but professinally repaired by BMW. We are talking 'light' damage on one side.Fork leg, cylinder head cover, tank repair, new engine bars, new screen & indicator.Repaired July last year.Bike is now having a new gearbox fitted under warranty. My bike is an 04 with 6000mls purchased 2wks ago :( Worried

Name & shame.....................reckon they should have told you before purchase or you should have done your own HPi report..I always do even when buying from a dealer

Do HPIs tell you about ANY insurance work or just cat* write-offs and finance?

I don't think the HPI report would pick up on accident repairs where the vehicle has not been written off.

As for the repairs, if they have been done properly, then there shouldn't be a problem.

I agree Bob after further investigation it looks as if it was done properly and by BMW. I was definitely  at first though. Im still gonna try to get an extra years warranty out of BMW for the gearbox failure.

I feel that they should have told you when selling the bike though:shoot:

i think you will find that the dealer only as to tell you the bikes history if you ask

If it were a 'new' bike that the dealership had damaged on a PDI ride and then repaired it, I might be a bit bothered, but as it's an 04 bike with 6k on it, it seems to me all they've done is put it right.....so what you've actually ended up with is a mostly 04 bike with some brand new bits on it.

If there's no visible sign, it's not recorded on any paperwork or insurance records so it won't affect resale and it's the bike you want, be happy with your result.

I can't see a problem.

so you have an 04 bike that looks in good nick with 6000 miles on it.

whats the problem ???

every car maker that imports cars to the uk has its own bodyshops on the docks they straighten what was bent on the boat.
you have exactly what you set out to buy
ride it and enjoy it !!!

cant see an issue myself.:D

Sure thing .........Ming

The BMW import/export terminal @ Thorne where all the cars/bikes come into & Mini's leave, have full workshop and bodyshop facilities........ to correct any shipping faults before despatch to dealerships

Remember the car ferry ...............sinking in Dover shipping channel..............testament that accidents happen between factory and country of destination !!

Just following the way this tread has diverted slightly, and would take great pleasure in telling the following true little tale.

Given that the East Anglian Regiments were, amongst other forces, quite involved in the building of the Death Railway, under Japanese guidance. You would have thought that their first shipments of cars into England would have been elseware. Not so, they arranged for the ship to berth and be unloaded at Harwich.

If you have ever been to a last moving car, stock car event you would get the picture. They didn't need transporters to move them to the compoud, bulldozers would have done the job.

Thanks for all your answers and opinions, it is clear the dealer new nothing about the previous damage and was as surprised as I was when I challenged them about it. Yes I was a little shocked at first because of the gearbox failure and now this but I have calmed down and like you all have said I now have a bike with new parts and a new gearbox shortly. Still feel like I should milk this a little with BMW though. :D

The dealer might say he knew nothing but I've been very impressed with the history their computer system has brought up on the two boxers I've owned. As well as the service history it also detailed extra work done and the replacement gearbox of my current bike.

Definitely a deal to be done with this info imo.

I actually wrote a letter to BMW customer service asking for an additional free 1yr warranty. They have responded quickly by offering to pay 50% with the dealer and myself paying 25% each. Now this would not be too bad if BMW had not just doubled the cost of a used bike warranty to £659

If you work it out it still means I have to cough up over £160 which to be honest with you im not happy about. I am considering a response but not sure yet how to word it. The accident damage info if it can be used at all can only be used against the dealer I guess.

£659!!!!

That seems very expensive for just one years peace of mind, extortionate even. I cant see how they can justify that for what is a relatively new vehicle and one which they lead us to believe will be a reliable mode of transport for many years.

Shocking.

John I think your reply is going to form a greater part of my response. Thanks very much :thumb

Anybody else wanna help :D

The warranty costs have increased dramatically this year because of changes in regulations which now regard warrantys as a form of insurance. That means supervision by the FSA and a huge increase in costs.
